PM Albanese confirms Australia's support for India's 2036 Olympic hosting bid: 'I'm certain Australia will support'

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese threw his support behind India's bid to earn hosting rights for the 2036 Olympic Games on Friday. India has long participated in the quadrennial sporting spectacle but has never secured hosting rights. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has repeatedly voiced his ambition for the nation to stage the mega event.

Prime Minister Modi is currently on a three-nation tour, starting with Indonesia, and made a stop in Australia to boost India's ties with the countries he is visiting.

PM Albanese backs India's 2036 Olympics bid

At the Melbourne Cricket Ground, PM Albanese highlighted that with Australia hosting the 2030 Olympics and India bidding for the 2036 Games, Canberra would extend support for their proposal.

He added that the next decade would be a period to build stronger ties through friendly rivalry, serious sporting contests and deeper cooperation across multiple areas.

"With India hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games, Australia hosting the 2032 Olympics and India bidding for the 2036 Olympics, which I'm certain Australia will support, there is a decade of opportunity ahead of us for more friendly rivalry, serious contests and increased cooperation right across the board," Albanese said.

PM Modi: We are striving to host the Olympics in India

PM Modi emphasised India's growing role in hosting global sports events, noting that the country would host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and is striving to host the 2036 Olympics. He also highlighted that sports infrastructure would be developed on a massive scale to support such events, reflecting India's ambition to become a key hub for international competitions.

"India is set to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030. We are also striving to host the Olympics in India in 2036. Brisbane will host the Olympics in 2032. Sports infrastructure will be developed on a mega scale to host these global events," PM Modi said.

PM Modi was in Australia from July 8-10 for the India-Australia annual summit in Melbourne and will now head to New Zealand for the final leg of the three-nation tour.
