That said, it’s the second consecutive event in which the two-time Olympic athlete and former world champion has failed to finish among the top-two, which he had achieved in 26 consecutive competitions before the worlds in Tokyo!

After winning the Rome meet with a throw of 92.62m, Pathirage wins the Doha meet with a best effort of 88.68m! He signs off with a throw of 81.35m in his final attempt, with Anderson Peters throwing 80.64m in his final attempt and Curtis Thompson registering a foul. Neeraj Chopra finishes fourth with a best effort of 85.69m in his first event of the year.

The final round will feature only the top-three competitors – Rumesh Pathirage (88.68m), Anderson Peters (86.38m) and Curtis Thompson (85.99m) in this case. And given the gap between Pathirage and Thompson, the Sri Lankan is a strong favourite to win the event!

Grenada’s Anderson Peters, who had won bronze in the 2024 Paris Olympics and had won the Diamond League final later that year, moves into the lead now with a throw of 86.38m in his second attempt!

Neeraj Chopra and Ukraine’s Artur Felfner, meanwhile, foul in their first attempts and are at the bottom of the standings. Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage starts with a throw of 82.62m.

Germany’s Julian Weber had won the men’s javelin throw in the Diamond League final in Zurich last year with consecutive 90m throws, winning the event with a best effort of 91.51m.

Neeraj Chopra, meanwhile, had finished second with a best effort of 84.35m. It was the second successive year the Indian had finished runner-up at the Diamond League final, having missed out on the trophy by just one centimetre the previous year.

The men’s javelin throw final is scheduled to get underway at 11.14 pm IST, according to the information provided on the event’s official website. Stay tuned for more updates.

“Technically, that throw was not that good, it was really fast from the arm but if I had done better with my lower body, that may be (added) two to three metre more. I looked at the video not so many times,” Chopra told reporters on the eve of the Doha Diamond League.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Keshorn Walcott would be the key threat for two-time Olympic medallist Chopra based on the fact that he is the reigning world champion.

However, based on current form, it would be hard to ignore Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage, who had won the Rome Diamond League meet earlier this month with a stunning 92.62m throw, becoming the fourth Asian to breach the 90m-mark.

“Now I’m working with someone who was my senior when I first started. He knows my story from the last 15-16 years,” Chopra told reporters ahead of the Doha Diamond League meet.

“I really like this approach. We spoke about it and decided to start training together because he already understands my training plans and everything,” he added.

Chaudhary, incidentally was Chopra’s coach in his hometown of Panipat in Haryana at the start of his career and had introduced him to the fundamentals of the sport.

“After Tokyo, me and Jan were working on very specific things, but I needed to stay in one place throughout the season and that wasn’t really possible,” Chopra told reporters on the eve of the Doha Diamond League.

“After Tokyo Worlds I decided that maybe I needed to work with my own ideas and approach,” he added.

Chopra begins his 2026 season at the same event where he had broken the 90-metre mark for the first time in his career, and will be hoping for an encore on Friday. The upcoming event will also be his first since he parted ways with coach Jan Zelezny and joined hands with Jai Chaudhary.
