Slavia vs Sparta Prague derby abandoned after fans invade pitch, attack goalkeeper | WATCH

The Prague derby between Slavia Prague and Sparta Prague was abandoned after chaotic scenes unfolded at the Fortuna Arena on Saturday. The two sides were in action in a group-stage match, with Sparta leading 3-2 in the Czech First League showdown.

Slavia were just moments away from clinching the Czech League title, but that is when hundreds of fans invaded the pitch and interrupted the play. A player was also hurt during the incident.

Chaos unfolds during Prague Derby

The incident took place during the final moments of the Prague derby when home fans breached security barriers and stormed onto the pitch. Players from both clubs ran towards the tunnel for safety.

Video footage showed the pitch invaders had lit flares and had thrown them on the turf. They targeted the away section, as pyrotechnics were thrown into their stands, creating a giant cloud of smoke and causing uncontrollable chaos.

As the commotion heightened, the referee initially suspended the game before calling it off for good. As soon as the game was abandoned, the away side raced to their team bus and rushed out of the Eden Arena.

Czech police had to intervene after security could not handle the chaos, and launched a criminal proceeding over suspicion of riot.

Away players hurt during commotion

Sparta goalkeeper Jakub Surovcik was seen lying on the field in pain, apparently struck by a flare. He accused the fans of threats and assault, calling it 'absolutely unacceptable.'

“For someone to run up and threaten me to my face during the match, accompanied by an assault, is absolutely unacceptable, and I will be pursuing this ​through legal channels,” ​Surovcik wrote on social media.

Czech media reported that the pitch invaders also assaulted Matyas Vojta and one of Sparta's medical staff.

Slavia chairman Jaroslav Tvrdik criticised the attack on the opponent's players and deemed the incident a 'disgrace.' The title win slipped out of the club's hands, and they would have to wait for any punishment the authorities might impose on them for the incident.
