Man United likely to offer Michael Carrick full-time head coach role after red-hot Premier League run

Michael Carrick is expected to be offered a full-time deal as head coach of Manchester United after helping the club confirm their return to the UEFA Champions League with a stellar run over the last four months. The former United defensive midfielder had assumed charge of the club on an interim basis after Ruben Amorim was sacked from the role in January after just 14 months in charge.

Carrick has since overseen a remarkable turnaround which began with victories over Manchester City (2-0) and Arsenal (3-2), teams that are currently locked in a fierce battle for the top spot. The 'Red Devils' have played a total of 14 Premier League games during the 44-year-old's watch since January, winning 10 and drawing and losing two games each.

The latest of those wins was a thrilling 3-2 victory over current title holders Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday, which confirmed a top-five finish for United and a return to the elite European competition.

Permanent role will be Carrick's to turn down

According to a report on The Guardian, Carrick is yet to discuss an extension of his interim role, with United's management having waited until their Champions League qualification to discuss the topic. As per sources mentioned in the report, the offer of a permanent role will be Carrick's to turn down following the team's home win over Liverpool.

The 20-time English top-flight champions had finished an abysmal 15th last season – their worst finish ever in the Premier League – and weren't faring too well in the first half of the ongoing season either, forcing the club to part ways with Amorim.

The report, however, states that Carrick has the backing of the squad as well as football director Jason Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada to continue in the role, with captain Bruno Fernandes and senior defender Harry Maguire among those keen to see the former England international continue in the role.

"He has the full confidence of the group. And look, I sat on the bench with him and how he teaches everyone is amazing. I think he has the magic with like these [Sir Alex] Ferguson times, these kinds of things. He’s a pleasure, and then of course I think he deserves it," said Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha, who was among United's goal-scorers against Liverpool at the Old Trafford.

United play reach of their three remaining games away from home, starting with Sunderland on Saturday, and will be favourites to finish among the top-three alongside Arsenal and cross-town rivals City.
