Lionel Messi was spotted in a heated conversation with Portuguese match referee Joao Pinheiro during the 2026 World Cup quarterfinal match between Argentina and Switzerland on Sunday.

Switzerland looked to have the game in their bag after pulling off an all-out attack against the defending champions, Argentina. But once they were brought down to ten men, La Albiceleste struck twice in extra time to secure a lead and claim a thrilling 3-1 victory over the Swiss side.

Messi engages in heated conversation with referee Pinherio

The incident happened in the first half of the 2026 World Cup semifinal when Switzerland geared up to take a free kick. Messi, who stood in Argentina's defensive wall, looked unhappy with how referee Pinheiro spoke to him while telling him to go back.

The live broadcast showed Messi having a heated interaction with the referee after the free kick was taken, as two players looked on. The footage of the incident went viral on social media, with Messi seemingly saying, "Don’t disrespect me. I speak to you with respect, so don’t disrespect me."

As Messi’s temper flared, referee João Pinheiro remained composed, refraining from issuing any warnings or cards, and allowing the match to continue without further interruption. He further chose not to take any disciplinary action against the veteran footballer.
