Kylian Mbappe sets new record, becomes fastest player to reach historic FIFA World Cup goal landmark

France and Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe continued his fine form in the 2026 World Cup by achieving a significant milestone after Les Blues' 2-0 victory over Morocco in the quarterfinal on Friday (Thursday in the US) in Foxborough.

The French captain became the fastest player to reach 20 goals in World Cup history, showcasing remarkable resilience and composure as France chase a third consecutive appearance in the final.

Mbappe first to achieve huge World Cup feats

Mbappe helped France gain a 1-0 lead in the 60th minute after receiving an assist from Desire Doué at the Gilette Stadium. Ousmane Dembele struck to take France 2-0 up against Morocco and win the knockout fixture.

The French footballer's standout performance on the global stage has been solid, as he helped shape his team's path in the quadrennial football tournament.

The French footballer also became the youngest to feature in 20 FIFA World Cup matches when he was named in France's starting line-up for the quarterfinal against Morocco.

Mbappe has now scored 20 goals across the 2018, 2022, and ongoing 2026 World Cups. He has also tied Lionel Messi in this year’s Golden Boot race with eight goals. However, the French striker currently leads the race thanks to his higher assist tally (2) compared to the Argentine veteran.

Mbappe missed out on maintaining flawless record

Mbappe, however, also made unwanted World Cup history after he missed scoring a penalty against Morocco. France was awarded a penalty in the 28th minute after an extensive VAR review, but the French captain failed to capitalise.

The 27-year-old's perfect record ended after he failed to convert a goal, becoming the second French player to fail to score from the spot in regulation time in the FIFA World Cup.

Despite Mbappe losing out on a flawless record, France held on to their lead to seal a victory over Morocco and advance to the semifinal, becoming the first team to do so in the 2026 World Cup.
