Jude Bellingham could not contain his emotions following England's defeat to Argentina in the 2026 World Cup semifinal after he slapped Valentin Barco on the head on Thursday. The Three Lions' loss ended their World Cup dream, extending their wait to win the prestigious title.

Argentina clinched a thrilling 2-1 victory over England, with Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez scoring within seven minutes in the game's second half to put their side ahead. For the Three Lions, Anthony Gordon scored in the 55th minute, but the defending champions pivoted the momentum around, sealing a major victory.

Bellingham hits Barco on the head

The incident happened after the referee blew the final whistle, with Argentina players seen celebrating their victory as they marched into their second consecutive final. Bellingham stood on the field in disbelief after making little impact in the game. He was initially checked up by an opposing player who shared a handshake.

The Argentine players celebrated their victory, and Barco joined the revelry. Bellingham stepped forward and smacked Barco on the head.

It looked like Barco had said something to the English midfielder, leading to his reaction. In response, Barco pushed him back, leading to a brief confrontation before other players intervened to de-escalate the situation.

Bellingham also engaged in tense conversation with Messi

Apart from Barco, Bellingham was also involved in a tense exchange with Lionel Messi. It happened over an uncalled foul, and their conversation ended after Messi stared at Bellingham and then dismissively nodded his head.

Following the match, Bellingham opened up on his conversation with the veteran Argentine striker, saying, "[We were] discussing a foul, actually. But it was nothing bad. I'm sure everyone will do their thing and make it a big deal. But no, it was nothing really.

"I thought there was a foul earlier, and he said, 'Well, what about the one on me?' and I was kind of saying, 'You're strong enough to take it,' you know what I mean?" the Real Madrid star said.

Despite losing in the semifinals, England's run is over, as they will face France in the third-place play-off match on Sunday, July 19, in Miami. (July 18 in the US).
