'Gutted' Harry Kane rues England's heartbreaking World Cup semifinal defeat to Argentina

Harry Kane spoke out on England's unfortunate 1-2 defeat to Argentina in the 2026 World Cup semifinal in Atlanta on Thursday. The Three Lions have not reached a World Cup final since 1966, when they won the title, and the wait for their second-ever title victory continued after Thomas Tuchel's side were kicked out in the semifinal.

The Lionel Messi-led Argentina sealed a thrilling victory, with jam-packed action throughout the play. Tensions also flared during and after the play in one of the most exciting matches in the 2026 World Cup.

'In the end, it wasn't enough'

Speaking to the BBC after the match, Kane expressed his disappointment, explaining that they tried to hold on rather than continue pressing, which wasn't enough. He added that the Three Lions were left just blocking and defending and were unable to match them man-for-man.

"We played a good game ​for the large majority of it. Once we went 1-0 up, we seemed to just ​try and hold on. At this level, it's not enough, so just gutted, gutted because we've worked so hard to be here and the lads have given every last bit of ​running, sweat, blood, tears, whatever it is.

"After the goal, whether it was them putting ​more men forward or us just not being able to match them man for man, it just ‌was wave ⁠after wave, and we were trying to hold on as we were putting blocks in. But in the end, it wasn't enough," Kane said.

The England striker added that he was 'gutted' for the entire team and fans.

Argentina marches into 2026 World Cup Final

After a tense first half, England secured the opening goal after Anthony Gordon scored in the 55th minute. But destiny was with Argentina, with goals in the second half from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez proving decisive against the Three Lions.

Argentina advanced to the World Cup final and will face Spain on Monday, July 20 (July 19 in the US). Meanwhile, England would face France in the third-place play-off showdown on Sunday, July 19.
