Controversy erupts during England-Norway World Cup quarters after Bellingham's equaliser sparks furore; FIFA issues statement

England advanced to the 2026 World Cup semifinals after overcoming a spirited Norway challenge, securing a 2‑1 victory on Sunday. Jude Bellingham’s brilliant brace kept the Three Lions’ World Cup dream alive and thriving.

However, a major controversy erupted just before halftime when Norway were leading 1-0, and Bellingham netted an equaliser in Miami. But the Norwegian side was unhappy as they claimed the goal shouldn't have been allowed.

Controversy erupts over Bellingham's first-half equaliser

The incident occurred in the game's first half, when Norwegian goalkeeper Orjan Nyland's goal kick upfield seemed to hit the wire of FIFA's Sky Cam, a camera placed high above the field of play. England gained possession of the ball, and Bellingham fired an equaliser a few passes later.

The Norwegian players and head coach Stale Solbakken immediately challenged the goal, with Haaland seen pointing towards the wires above. Coach Solbakken also exchanged words with referee Clement Turpin after England's goal.

Ideally, the game should've been stopped and restarted when the ball made contact with the camera wire since it's an outside object. But the match continued, and the incident stirred a huge debate over the referee's officiating in the tournament.

FIFA issues clarity

After the controversy erupted, FIFA issued a clarification, dismissing all claims and saying that there was no proof that the ball had touched the camera's wire.

"Before England’s goal in minute 45+2 against Norway, the sensor in the Connected Ball showed no peak in the 'heartbeat of the ball' when in the air, and therefore no evidence that the ball touched the overhead wire and changed the movement of the ball," FIFA Media wrote on 'X'.

Bellingham went on to score in stoppage time, extending England's lead to 2-1 against Norway to advance to the 2026 World Cup semifinals.
