Sri Lanka cracks the whip on players involved in Vaibhav Sooryavanshi fight, BCCI refrains from similar step: Report

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has imposed sanctions on the players involved in a scuffle involving Vaibhav Sooryavanshi during the tri-series fixture in Dambulla on Monday, June 15.

The incident took place following Sri Lanka A's victory over India A in the super over. Sooryavanshi was on strike, and India required 14 off three balls. The teen batting phenomenon failed to achieve it, leaving the opposition euphoric as they sealed a thrilling win.

Sooryavanshi and Suryansh Shedge were walking back towards the dressing room when some Sri Lankan players turned up the sledging and banter. The Indian batters turned around to confront the opposition, leading to a heated on-field moment.

SLC sanctions players involved in scuffle involving Sooryavanshi

According to Cricbuzz, match referee Pradeep Jeyapragash sanctioned players involved in the Sooryavanshi scuffle, with Vishen Halambage being the primary recipient.

Jeyaprakash also imposed a sanction on Niroshan Dickwella, who attempted to be a peacemaker during the fight between Halambage and Sooryavanshi. However, it is understood that the penalty was not related to the scuffle and was for a different reason, though the reason remains unclear.

Reports added that Dickwella's sanction could have been for excessive appealing. Additionally, the punishment was imposed by SLC, and the International Cricket Council (ICC) had no involvement in the matter.

BCCI avoids taking SLC-like step

While SLC imposed penalties to keep their players in line, the BCCI seemingly downplayed the incident, avoiding a similar route. India's spin-bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule also spoke about the incident on the eve of the IND vs AFG 2nd ODI match.

"I think it was an unfortunate incident. But we don't know how he was provoked. Because as far as I know Vaibhav, he is a very composed boy. I'm sure there are experienced coaches there who will make him understand.

"And I think the Sri Lankan players should also be educated in terms of how they need to behave. And so does it go with us. We will make sure that information is given to him as to why that happened. But he will learn. He's a young kid, and going forward, some sort of understanding will be there with him. I'm sure he will not repeat it," The India spin-bowling coach said.

India A are currently in action against Afghanistan A in Dambulla today, while the Indian senior men's team would be in action as well later in the day in one-day action against AFG at Lucknow.
