Veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has made a strong statement about MS Dhoni’s return, leaving many Chennai Super Kings fans surprised. Ashwin suggested that Dhoni might only play later in the tournament, depending on the team’s situation in IPL 2026.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said that CSK are unlikely to rush Dhoni back while they are still in contention for the playoffs. He said that the legendary keeper might return to the playing XI only after their fate in the tournament is confirmed.

"I’ll tell you directly. If CSK gets knocked out of the tournament, then maybe Mahendra Singh Dhoni will play. CSK have six points. They need eight points from six games. If they win four matches, they are in. So why take a risk now? They won’t take a risk," he said.

Dhoni's comeback pushed back again

Dhoni has not played a single match this season due to a calf injury, and fans have been eagerly waiting for his return. However, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming recently confirmed that the injury has resurfaced, making his comeback in the near future uncertain for now.

Looking at the points table, CSK are currently placed sixth with six points from eight matches. Their campaign is still alive, but they need a strong finish to qualify for the playoffs. Punjab Kings are leading the table with 13 points, while Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Rajasthan Royals are also in a strong position with 10 points each.

Ashwin’s comments suggest that team management will focus on qualification first rather than rushing Dhoni back from injury. With six games still left, CSK need to win at least four matches to reach the 14-point mark, which is usually considered safe for playoff qualification.

For now, Dhoni fans might have to wait longer than anticipated. CSK are scheduled to lock horns against arch-rivals Mumbai Indians in their next match on May 2.
