Why new speed limits have been imposed on Noida Expressway

The roads near Delhi are the most unsafe in the country, and the winter fog makes them even deadlier. To prevent road accidents due to low visibility, the Noida police have set new speed limits for vehicles traveling on the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway.Starting from 15 December, the speed limit on the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway will be capped at 75 km per hour for light vehicles and 50 km per hour for heavy vehicles for two months, the Gautam Buddh Nagar police said Monday.The Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, which spans over 25 km and has six lanes, is a high-speed corridor that connects Noida and Greater Noida in the Gautam Buddh Nagar district adjacent to Delhi. It sees heavy traffic on a regular basis, with thousands of vehicles using the expressway.As of 15 December, the speed limit on the Yamuna Expressway has been reduced to 75 km per hour for light vehicles and 60 km per hour for heavy trucks. However, due to safety concerns associated with winter fog, these limits have been temporarily decreased to 75 km per hour for light vehicles and 60 km per hour for heavy vehicles throughout the designated period.“In order to prevent and reduce road accidents due to reduced visibility on the roads during the winter season, the speed limit of vehicles plying on the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway has been decreased from 15 December, 2023, to 15 February, 2024. According to officials, around one thousand road accidents have been reported so far this year in which nearly 400 lives have been lost across Noida and Greater Noida.
