Pete Hegseth is bringing his wife, Jennifer Rauchet, to meetings at the Pentagon, insiders have said. Rauchet, a 41-year-old former Fox News producer, is often seen sitting at the back of these meetings. But what is she doing? Does she have clearance?

Pete Hegseth’s controversial tenure in the Trump administration continues.

Even before being sworn into office as US Defence Secretary, Hegseth was under fire for his drinking and his alleged mistreatment of women.

Hegseth, who has purged a number of top generals at the Pentagon, has often decried the US military as ‘weak’ and ‘woke’. Now, according to several media reports, Hegseth is being accused of bringing his wife to meetings at the Pentagon.

But is it true? What do we know?

What we know

According to The Guardian, Hegseth is bringing his wife, Jennifer Rauchet, to meetings at the Pentagon. Rauchet, a former Fox News producer, is often seen sitting at the back of these meetings. What has surprised staff is the fact that she has no official title within the Trump administration, does not have security clearance, and is not answerable to Congress. It remains unclear what she is doing during the meetings.

According to IBTimes.co.uk, Jennifer, 41, met Hegseth when they were both working at Fox News. At the time they began their affair, they were married to other people. Rauchet, in the aftermath of the affair being discovered, was reassigned to another show. They married in 2019 at the Trump National Golf Club in New Jersey.

This isn’t the first time Rauchet has been embroiled in controversy either. Last year, she was part of the infamous Signal group chat where Hegseth shared sensitive military information about planned airstrikes in Yemen. The Pentagon later determined Hegseth breached its rules by sharing classified details with unauthorised people, including his wife, brother, and personal lawyer.

Rauchet isn’t the only one Hegseth is bringing to such meetings. According to The Daily Beast, Hegseth’s younger brother Phil is also attending such meetings. Hegseth appointed Phil as his senior adviser in March 2025. A Pentagon spokesperson had confirmed Phil’s official title as the senior adviser to the secretary for the Department of Homeland Security and liaison officer to the Defense Department.

Phil previously worked for The Hudson Institute, a right-wing think tank. He holds a BA in journalism and communications from the University of St. Thomas. He previously worked in communications at the Florida non-profit Better Together and the Foundation for Defense of Democracies.

A Pentagon spokesperson did not confirm to IBTimes.co.uk that Rauchet holds any security clearance. Press secretary Kingsley Wilson said she has ‘never attended a meeting where sensitive information or classified information was discussed’.

Hegseth increasingly isolated

According to insiders at the Pentagon, the developments come as Hegseth has become increasingly isolated in recent months. They say Hegseth has grown paranoid and fearful about the possibility of Trump blaming him for the Iran war and responded by surrounding himself with his friends and relatives.

His other companions include Tim Parlatore, an attorney who has previously represented Hegseth as well as Trump, and Ricky Buria, a former marine who also worked in the previous Biden administration.

Hegseth, who has sought to remake the military in his own image, has fired at least two dozen top Pentagon officials. Over 60 per cent of those whohave been removed have been Black or women — which is in line with the Trump campaign’s crusade against diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Hegseth recently removed Navy Secretary John Phelan and General Randy George, the US Army Chief of Staff.

Deputy Defense Secretary Steve Feinberg, a billionaire who owns an investment firm, is said to be running the Pentagon on a day-to-day basis.

Experts are worried by the purge at the Pentagon and Hegseth’s plans for the US military. “It talked about an officer purge and going after the so-called woke officers at the senior level,” Paul Eaton, a retired Army major-general, told The Guardian.

“They want to create ideologically pure armed forces that will be pliant to the president and his secretary of defence and whose oath will be more to a person than to the constitution.”

Eaton, who commanded US forces after the 2003 Iraq invasion, compared it to Stalin purging generals of the Red Army.

“I believe that the senior leadership of the US military has been substantially damaged,” Eaton said. “You develop a fracture in the cohesion of the people at that level. It is as if, if you haven’t been purged, you wonder if you are next if you say the wrong thing to the man or woman on your left or right that may invoke the wrath of the secretary of defence or the president. That’s a really unhealthy environment when you’re afraid to speak your mind, and not just truth to power, but truth in the defence of the armed forces against stupid decisions.”

They worry about whether US military leaders have it in them to stand up to Trump if he gives an illegal order like dropping a nuclear bomb on Iranian civilians.

“For years, we’ve been told that we don’t have to worry about a crazy president launching a nuclear war, because the military would not carry out any illegal order,” Joe Cirincione, a veteran national security analyst and nuclear non-proliferation expert, told the outlet.

“But that’s not real. What we’ve seen in the last year is the military repeatedly carrying out illegal orders. The attacks on the alleged drug boats in the Caribbean and Pacific, the raid to seize [President Nicolás] Maduro in Venezuela, the war on Iran, have all been illegal — yet the military carried them all out.

“People don’t understand the president has sole unfettered authority to launch nuclear weapons whenever he wants, for any reason he wants. It’s a very short chain of command. It turns out that relying on the military to refuse an illegal order from the president is not an adequate barrier. We need something a whole lot stronger.”
