How PM Modi’s foreign honours and parliament addresses surpass those of other Indian PMs

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to touch another milestone in his 12 years in power. On June 10, he will become India’s longest-serving elected PM, completing 4,399 consecutive days in the office.

With this, he will surpass the record set by Jawaharlal Nehru, independent India’s first prime minister. Under PM Modi’s tenure, India’s foreign diplomacy has enhanced the country’s stature on the global stage.

India's growing importance has been recognised by foreign governments through laurels and awards conferred on Modi.

Modi got more foreign honours than Nehru

Narendra Modi has received the highest number of honours from foreign governments for any Indian prime minister.

Since coming to power in May 2014, Modi has been felicitated with 30 international honours and state decorations abroad.

On the other hand, Nehru received two foreign state honours during his over 16-year tenure, News18 reported, citing information tabled in Parliament.

The honours bestowed upon PM Modi have come from countries across Asia, Europe, Africa, West Asia, the Caribbean and the Pacific, as per the Ministry of External Affairs’ written reply in Parliament.

Some of these awards are the highest civilian decorations that foreign governments can confer on a visiting head of government.

In 2025 alone, PM Modi was felicitated with top state honours from Mauritius, Barbados, Sri Lanka, Cyprus, Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Brazil and Namibia, among others. According to Parliament records, these latest additions have increased the tally to 30 foreign state honours.

Why these awards matter

Diplomats say awards conferred upon foreign leaders are hardly viewed as just personal accolades.

State honours are often a nod to strengthened bilateral ties and are symbolic endorsements of a country's growing significance in another nation's foreign diplomacy, as per News18.

Several countries that have honoured PM Modi have cited India’s pivotal role in development partnerships, South-South cooperation, climate initiatives and digital public infrastructure. India has also become the voice of the Global South, raising its issues.

Earlier, India's foreign diplomacy mostly focused on major global powers and its immediate neighbours. However, recent awards conferred on the Indian PM have come from countries across Africa, the Caribbean, the Gulf, Europe and the Pacific Islands. In these regions, India has made efforts to deepen engagement over the last decade.

Modi’s record no of speeches in foreign parliaments

It is not just in foreign state honours that Modi has broken the records of previous Indian prime ministers.

So far, PM Modi has delivered 17 addresses to foreign parliaments, a figure equal to the combined speeches by all his Congress predecessors. He reached this tally during his speech at the Namibian Parliament, which ended with a standing ovation and resounding applause from lawmakers last July.

The visit was part of his five-nation tour, during which he also addressed the parliaments of Ghana and Trinidad and Tobago.

Official sources told PTI at the time that all Congress prime ministers combined – Manmohan Singh (seven), Indira Gandhi (four), Jawaharlal Nehru (three), Rajiv Gandhi (two) and PV Narasimha Rao (one) – delivered 17 such speeches spanning several decades.

Former non-Congress PMs Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Morarji Desai addressed foreign parliaments twice and once, respectively.

Modi alone matched the tally of Congress PMs, underlining his stature as one of India’s most globally engaged leaders, officials said.

PM Modi has addressed parliaments of developed and developing nations, a signal of global respect and relevance India commands today.

The countries where he has spoken in parliaments include the US, Australia, Britain, Nepal, Mongolia, Mauritius, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Guyana, Fiji and Uganda.

“India stood with many countries in the Global South during their independence struggles. They listened to us then, and they still want to hear us today, especially on our democratic and development journey,” an official said.
