TMC’s Mahua Moitra marries Pinaki Misra in Germany. Who is he?

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra has married Pinaki Misra, a senior leader from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD).

A photo of the two, smiling and holding hands in Germany, has gone viral on social media.

Moitra, who represents Krishnanagar in West Bengal, and Misra, a former MP from Puri in Odisha, have not yet commented publicly on their marriage.

TMC MP Saayoni Ghosh shared a photo on X featuring herself with Mahua Moitra, Pinaki Misra, and fellow MP June Maliah. In her post, she wrote, "Congratulations Mm & Pm... @MahuaMoitra @OfPinaki wishing you a lifetime of love and laughter."

Who is Pinaki Misra?

Misra was born on October 23, 1959, in Puri, Odisha. He studied History at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, and later got a law degree from the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi.

He began his political journey with the Indian National Congress and was elected to the Lok Sabha from Puri in 1996.

He later joined the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and has since won three consecutive terms in 2009, 2014, and 2019.

Over the years, Misra has been part of several important parliamentary committees, such as the Standing Committee on Finance, the Business Advisory Committee, and consultative panels for the Ministries of Defence, Civil Aviation, and Law & Justice.

Misra was earlier married to Sangita Misra, and has a son and a daughter from that marriage.

He was also named in the “cash-for-query” controversy, with the BJP calling for his removal from the BJD, citing an affidavit by Darshan Hiranandani to the Lok Sabha Ethics Committee. Misra denied the allegations and said he would take legal action against the BJP.

Notably, his grandfather, Godabarish Misra, was a noted poet and socialist leader who followed Gandhian ideals and opposed caste-based discrimination.

His father, Lokanath Misra, was a two-time MLA who was associated first with the Congress and later the Swatantra Party. He also served as the Governor of Assam from 1991 to 1997, according to The Indian Express.

Misra’s uncle, Ranganath Misra, was the 21st Chief Justice of India. His cousin, Dipak Misra, became the 45th Chief Justice in 2017.

He was earlier married to Sangita Misra, and has a son and a daughter from that marriage.

From banker to Lok Sabha MP: Mahua Moitra’s journey

Moitra was born on October 12, 1974, in Assam. Before entering politics, she worked as an investment banker.

She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Mathematics from Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, USA, earning Magna Cum Laude honours.

Moitra had a successful stint at JP Morgan, working in both London and New York. She later left her job and returned to India to join politics.

In 2010, she became a member of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) led by Mamata Banerjee. She contested her first election in 2016 and won from the Karimpur assembly seat in West Bengal.

She is now one of the most recognised TMC leaders in Parliament, known for her powerful speeches during key debates.

Moitra was elected to the Lok Sabha twice from West Bengal’s Krishnanagar constituency. During her first term, she was disqualified following “cash-for-query” allegations.

She was previously married to Danish financier Lars Brorson, but the two later divorced.
