Jaipur girl suicide: Was 9-year-old bullied before she jumped to her death from school building?

Eight months ago, a nine-year-old girl died after jumping from the school building’s fourth floor in Rajasthan’s Jaipur. Now, the family of the Class IV girl has released CCTV footage that shows their daughter had been bullied and that the school authorities took no action.

The parents of the girl say the footage is evidence that supports their long-standing claim that she was constantly bullied and that the school did nothing to stop it, contributing to their child’s death.

>> Following her demise, her parents registered an FIR against the school administration, alleging death under suspicious circumstances. They demanded a probe into the role of the teachers and staff, questioning how such an incident could occur inside the school premises.

>> Shocked by the news, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) carried out a probe and found serious lapses at the school over student safety, supervision, and anti-bullying measures.

>> In a show-cause notice to the school, the CBSE pointed out that the girl, whose classroom was on the ground floor, reached the fourth floor unnoticed before jumping. It also flagged the absence of a mandatory safety and security committee, lack of dedicated CCTV monitoring despite the school having over 5,000 students, and the failure to install safety nets or secure railings on higher floors.

What does the new CCTV footage reveal?

>> Now, eight months after the incident, her parents have released CCTV footage from that fateful day. The visuals capture the sequence of events inside the classroom shortly before the incident.

>> The video begins with showing the nine-year-old entering the classroom normally, greeting a classmate, and participating in a dance activity.

>> The footage then shows a digital slate being shown to her. As per a voice-over in the footage, several students repeatedly displayed the slate to her, after which her demeanour appeared to change. It notes that she looks distressed, uncomfortable, and embarrassed as classmates continue interacting with her over the device.

>> The minor then approaches her class teacher on several occasions. According to the family, she tried to explain to the teacher that something was wrong. However, on more than one instance, another student would approach the teacher at the same time as the girl, shifting focus away from her.

>> The narration claims that the girl’s anxiety began to climb, and she is even seen folding her hands as she tries to explain herself. At one point, she covers her mouth and then her head, in what the family describes as a visible reaction of shock.

>> The family alleges that the teacher’s response appeared stern and intimidating. Moments later, she is seen running out of the classroom alone.

>> She is then seen running up to the fourth floor with no interference from any staff or authority of the school.

What has the girl’s family said now?

>> The girl’s family states that the video shows that she was distressed and that the school failed to respond adequately to her concerns.

>> They have demanded stricter action against the school authorities, calling for the arrest of all involved, including the school principal and founder.

>> The parents have also alleged that the police have failed to investigate the case properly. “I have mentioned this before — we call the police so many times a day. If we say even the slightest thing, they stop answering our calls and refuse to meet us. We are now dealing with our third Investigating Officer (IO); we are completely frustrated, yet the correct charges still haven't been filed,” the girl’s mother was quoted as saying, according to a Moneycontrol report.

>> The police, meanwhile, have filed a chargesheet against the school owner, Saurabh Modi, principal Indu Dubey, and class teacher Poonita Sharma under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) relating to alleged criminal negligence.
