A Kuwaiti oil tanker carrying millions of barrels of crude was struck near Dubai.

The vessel, Al Salmi, suffered hull damage and a fire following what Kuwaiti authorities described as an Iranian drone strike, prompting fears of a potential oil spill in a strategically and ecologically sensitive zone.

What exactly happened to the Al Salmi tanker?

The Al Salmi, a Kuwait-flagged very large crude carrier (VLCC), was targeted while anchored at the Jebel Ali port anchorage in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

According to the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC), the strike occurred at approximately 12:10 am on Tuesday (March 31).

Officials confirmed that the attack caused structural damage to the vessel’s hull and triggered a fire onboard. The Dubai Media Office stated that emergency response and maritime firefighting units were immediately mobilised and were able to bring the blaze under control before eventually extinguishing it.

“All 24 crew members aboard the Kuwaiti crude tanker Al Salmi have been confirmed safe following the incident in waters off Dubai,” authorities said, adding that no injuries were reported.

The tanker, built in 2011, is a massive vessel measuring roughly 333 metres in length with a beam of 60 metres and a summer deadweight capacity of 319,660 tonnes. It sails under the Kuwaiti flag and is linked to the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation through ownership and operational structures.

How much oil was onboard and why does it matter?

At the time of the incident, the Al Salmi was fully loaded, significantly raising the stakes of any potential damage.

Data from maritime intelligence and tracking platforms indicated that the vessel was carrying around 2 million barrels of crude oil, including approximately 1.2 million barrels sourced from Saudi Arabia and about 800,000 barrels from Kuwait.

The cargo had reportedly been loaded nearly a month prior, with the tanker en route to Qingdao, China. The sheer scale of the oil onboard makes even a partial breach of the hull a serious concern, as it could release large quantities of crude into surrounding waters.

KPC acknowledged this risk, stating that the incident resulted in “damage to the vessel's hull and the outbreak of a fire onboard, with a potential oil spill in the surrounding waters.”

What is the current status of the vessel?

Following the strike, authorities moved to stabilise the situation. Dubai officials confirmed that the fire has been extinguished and that relevant teams continue to monitor the tanker and assess the extent of the damage.

KPC emphasised that a comprehensive technical evaluation is underway. “A detailed technical assessment of the damage is underway, and all necessary measures are being taken to safeguard the vessel and mitigate any environmental impact,” the company stated.

Emergency teams had earlier noted that they were working “to contain and control the situation in close coordination with the relevant authorities,” reflecting the seriousness of the response effort.

As of now, no major oil leak has been officially confirmed, but the possibility remains under active assessment as authorities evaluate the integrity of the tanker’s structure.

Who struck Al Salmi?

The attack on the Al Salmi is not an isolated event but part of a broader pattern of escalating hostilities in the Gulf region.

Since late February 2026, when the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran, maritime routes in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz have witnessed repeated attacks involving missiles and drone systems.

On the same day as the tanker incident, another vessel — a Greek-owned container ship operating near Saudi Arabia’s Ras Tanura — reported two separate projectile incidents within an hour.

According to maritime risk analysts, the projectiles struck the water near the ship, located approximately 22 nautical miles northeast of Ras Tanura. The crew was reported safe.

In a separate development earlier in March, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had claimed responsibility for an attack on a Liberian-flagged container vessel.

Despite these incidents, no group has formally claimed responsibility for the strike on the Al Salmi.

What has been the impact on global oil markets?

The attack has had immediate ripple effects on global energy markets. Brent crude prices rose by more than 2 per cent to reach $115.17 per barrel in early Asian trading following news of the strike.

Although prices later eased slightly amid reports suggesting potential diplomatic openings, the broader trend remains significant.

Brent crude is on course to record a monthly surge of around 59 per cent in March, marking its largest increase on record, largely driven by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

How would an oil spill behave in Gulf conditions?

If a spill were to occur, the characteristics of the Persian Gulf would influence how the oil spreads and persists. In warm waters like those off Dubai, crude oil tends to disperse more rapidly across the surface, forming a thin slick.

A portion of the oil, especially lighter compounds, could evaporate within 24 to 48 hours, releasing volatile organic compounds into the atmosphere. While this reduces the volume of oil in the water, it introduces air quality concerns.

Wave action can further transform the oil into a thicker, emulsified substance, often described as a mousse-like mixture, which is far more difficult to remove.

Additionally, regional current patterns — typically moving in a counterclockwise direction — combined with prevailing winds could push any spilled oil toward coastlines or nearby marine ecosystems.

Which ecosystems and infrastructure are at risk?

The potential environmental impact of a spill near Jebel Ali extends beyond open waters. The surrounding region includes ecologically sensitive zones and critical infrastructure.

The Jebel Ali Marine Sanctuary is a protected area that serves as a habitat for the critically endangered Hawksbill turtle. With the nesting season beginning around March and April, contamination of beaches could disrupt breeding cycles or harm hatchlings.

Mangrove ecosystems along the coast, particularly those consisting of Gray Mangrove (Avicennia marina), are highly susceptible to oil exposure. Oil can coat the roots, impairing their ability to absorb oxygen, while residues trapped in sediment can persist for extended periods due to low oxygen levels.

Nearby coral reefs and seagrass beds, which support marine biodiversity and species such as dugongs, could also face significant damage. Oil exposure can impair coral health and reproduction, while seagrass beds may be smothered, disrupting the food chain.

In addition to ecological concerns, infrastructure such as the Jebel Ali Power and Desalination Complex could be affected. Oil entering seawater intake systems has the potential to disrupt desalination processes, posing risks to water supply systems.
