How much will Trump’s July 4 fireworks cost, and who is paying for them?

"The largest fireworks show in history," US President Donald Trump has promised a spectacle like no other on July Fourth. The White House's massive fireworks display in Washington, DC, celebrating America's 250th birthday, is attempting to break fireworks records.

The Freedom 250, 2026 celebration has promised a record-shattering 40-minute display beginning at 10:30 pm, with 850,000 fireworks shells to be launched, according to officials.

The Trump administration aims to make this year's July Fourth show the loudest ever, etching a new memory into the national consciousness. Reports suggest Pyrotecnico is the company putting on the July Fourth show, and the company's CEO (chief executive officer), Stephen Vitale, is targeting "to make this fireworks the most memorable fireworks display that this generation will have ever seen."

July 4 fireworks show- but at what cost?

Neither Trump nor anyone in his administration has been very open about the budget for the July 4 celebration. How much will the entire pyrotechnics display cost? Who is expected to foot the bill- everything remains unclear.

NOTUS' (News of the United States) Anna Kramer approached many fireworks companies for an overall estimate on the show’s price tag. The projected cost is whopping in millions, the News Republic reported.

James Woods, the director of sales at Pyro Shows in Tennessee, told NOTUS: "You’re talking a many multimillion-dollar production, without a doubt." Pyro Shows helped stage one of the world record-setting fireworks displays in Dubai in 2014.

According to Woods, the cost of some individual shells for the upcoming celebration may range from $50 (Rs 4,761) to $1,000 (Rs 95,226). NOTUS estimated: "that if even 3 per cent of the devices used in this show cost $50, that would total $1.3 million (Rs 12.39 crore) for those devices alone," the report noted.

Kellner’s Fireworks owner Bob Kellner, another fireworks professional, predicted that even if the entire record-setting display used only the "filler" shells (the cheapest explosives possible, sold for around $2 a pop), the display would still cost a minimum price tag of $1.7 million (around Rs 16.19 crore).

Only one federal record offers details about the upcoming semiquincentennial celebrations. A December 2025 document from the Interior Department allocated $1.5 million (around Rs 14.33 crore) to Garden State Fireworks to stage the display.

According to NOTUS, Garden State Fireworks has handled Washington's July Fourth fireworks display for the past decade, and it usually secures contracts worth between $250,000 (around Rs 2.37 crore) and $300,000 (around Rs 2,85,44,925).

Why does the US celebrate July 4 with fireworks?

American Independence Day, 4 July, is the day when the Second Continental Congress unanimously adopted the Declaration of Independence in 1776. It signalled the official separation of the 13 original colonies from Great Britain amid the American Revolutionary War.

Independence Day was first celebrated on 4 July, 1777, with a fireworks display in Philadelphia in the midst of the American Revolutionary War. It was a time of artillery fire, explosions, and bombs bursting, but that’s not why the tradition is still practised.

Celebrating with loud pomp and show, in fact, became a tradition across the world over several centuries, long before the nation attained independence.
