India's new AI rules to come into effect

The new rules on artificial intelligence targeting Synthetically Generated Information (SGI) or deepfakes will come into effect in India from today. These rules were introduced through amendments to the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2026.

With this move, there will be a shift from social media platforms (like YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and X) from passive hosts to active gatekeepers. Under the new rules, all AI-generated or altered content that appears real must be clearly and prominently labelled as AI-generated or synthetic. Platforms must embed persistent metadata and unique identifiers into AI files, and intermediaries must warn users at least once every three months about the legal penalties for misusing AI, among other mandates.

The rules for taking down AI content will also be tightened. Firstly, the deadline to remove unlawful AI content (such as deepfakes or misinformation) after receiving a government or court order has been brought down to three hours compared to earlier, 36 hours.

Tariffs case verdict in the US SC likely

The US Supreme Court is likely to give a verdict in the high-stakes case Learning Resources, Inc vs Trump. The Court will be reviewing the legality of sweeping 'reciprocal' tariffs imposed by President Trump under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).

In May 2025, both the US Court of International Trade and the Federal Circuit ruled the tariffs were unlawful, but stayed their orders while the administration appealed. Lower courts previously ruled that the administration exceeded its statutory authority, and the Supreme Court heard oral arguments on an expedited basis on November 5, 2025.

Ranil Wickremesinghe's wife to appear before Sri Lanka police

Former First Lady Professor Maithree Wickremesinghe has been summoned to appear before the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) today. The summons is part of an ongoing investigation into the alleged misuse of public funds by her husband, former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Former President Wickremesinghe is accused of misappropriating approximately Rs 16.2 to 16.9 million in state funds to finance a private trip to the United Kingdom in late 2023.  The funds were allegedly used for the former President to attend Maithree Wickremesinghe's university graduation ceremony in London.

Amit Shah to launch second phase of Vibrant Villages Programme

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to launch the second phase of the Vibrant Villages Programme in Assam today. The formal inauguration is set to take place at Nathanpur village in the Katigorah area of Cachar district, located near the India-Bangladesh international border.

The programme is a Central sector scheme with a total budget of Rs 6,839 crore allocated through the financial year 2028–29. The project aims to upgrade road connectivity, telecommunications, healthcare, and education, and create sustainable livelihood opportunities to curb migration from frontier villages.
