Fact-check: Did Sasha Obama wear a Maga hat?

An unverified claim of Sasha Obama, daughter of former US President Barack Obama, wearing a Maga (Make America Great Again) cap has been greatly amplified on social media. The term "Maga" is mainly popularised by US President Donald Trump.

The now-viral post circulating on X claimed that the younger daughter of Obama and his wife, Michelle, was not just spotted donning that hat but also denounced her father and backed Trump.

As the post sparks quite a stir among the supporters of both sides, it's also going viral rapidly, racking up more than 1 million views on X.

So, is the claim that Sasha supports Trump true? Let's find out.

The claim

The viral post features Sasha wearing glasses, a top and sweats as she walks down the street. The same post also shows Sasha wearing a red colored hat with Maga written on it.

The unverified profile further alleges that when asked by a passerby about the pro-Trump attire, Sasha called herself "a registered Republican" who voted for and stands with Trump. She also denounced her father's presidency.

"My father nearly destroyed this country, and President Trump is still trying to clean up his mess," the post goes on to claim, adding that Sasha called father’s presidency "destructive" and said Trump was “right about everything.”

When asked about whether she believed she was betraying her dad, according to the post, Sasha said: "As I've gotten older, I've realised that I am my own woman and can make up my own mind. Trump was right about everything".

The viral post spread across X like wildfire and had everyone talking — but here comes the reality check.

The counter

Did Sasha actually wear a Maga hat as the alleged photo showed? No.

The image is altered or edited. There is no mainstream coverage of Sasha being seen in a pro-Trump attire, and importantly, there is no sharing from the Obama family.

Even Grok stepped in to clarify the claim. Analysis conducted by the xAI chatbot denoted that the image attached to the post appeared to be AI-generated and was likely part of a fabricated hoax circulating widely across social media.

“No, this didn't actually happen. It's a fabricated hoax with no credible news coverage or evidence. The photo is edited/AI-generated, and the quotes/claims are made up for engagement. Classic fake ‘breaking news’,” Grok fact-checked the photo.

Responding to another shared photo, the AI chatbot said, “No, this isn't true. No credible news outlets are reporting any such incident involving Sasha Obama in DC today (or recently), and she hasn't made any public statements like that. The story and image appear to be fabricated.”

Moreover, a senior Agence France-Presse (AFP) digital investigation journalist also fact-checked the photo and noted it was ‘altered’.
