Theatre veteran Satyadev Dubey passes away at 75

Mumbai: Renowned director, actor and screenplay writer Satyadev Dubey passed away this morning after suffering from a prolonged illness. He was 75."He was in coma for the past few months. He suffered a brain stroke and passed away in the hospital at 11.30 am," said Satyajit Dubey, his grandnephew.[caption id="attachment_165128" align="alignleft" width="380" caption="Image from ibnlive.com"][/caption]The veteran playwright and director had suffered a seizure at Prithvi Theatre Cafe in suburban Juhu in September 2010, and since then he was in coma. Dubey's health was fragile for quite some time and he was in and out of hospital in the last few years.Born in Chhattisgarh,  Dubey moved to Mumbai with a dream of becoming a cricketer. However, he ended up joining a theatre group headed by Ebrahim Alkazi. Having made Mumbai his home,  he went on to become a legend in Marathi-Hindi theatre.He had produced/directed plays of all the prominent playwrights of post-Independence period: Girish Karnad (Yayati, Hayavadana), Badal Sarkar (Evam Indrajit, Pagla Ghoda), Chandrashekhara Kambara (Aur Tota Bola -Jokumaraswamy in original Kannada), Mohan Rakesh (Aadhe Adhure), Vijay Tendulkar (Gidhade, Shantata! Court Chalu Aahe).Dubey also won a National award for Best Screenplay for Shyam Benegal's Bhumika. He was honoured with a Padma Bhushan in 2011.His theatre workshops were much sought-after among the amateurs and professionals alike.Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt tweeted, "Satyadev Dubey the icon of the world of theatre has passed away!
