'China ready to work with India,' says Wang Yi after talks with Jaishankar in Manila

China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that Beijing and New Delhi should "consolidate positive momentum" in bilateral ties during his talks with his Indian counterpart Dr S. Jaishankar.

According to Chinese state media Xinhua News, Wang Yi maintained that China and India should bear the well-being of humanity in mind, demonstrate a sense of responsibility as major countries, consolidate the positive momentum in bilateral relations, and strengthen coordination and cooperation in international and regional affairs.

Wang called on the two countries to make positive contributions to advancing multipolarity and greater democracy in international relations. During his meeting with Jaishankar, the Chinese diplomat maintained that his nation stands ready to work with India to implement common understandings reached by the leaders of the two nations.

He also pushed for maintaining close high-level exchanges, strengthening cooperation in areas including economy and trade, media, and people-to-people and cultural exchanges, and properly handling sensitive issues.

Jaishankar raises issue of market access

Meanwhile, in the Wednesday meeting, Jaishankar said that the neighbours ​should tackle key aspects of relations, such as fair market access and trade balance, ‌in New Delhi's effort to repair ties with Beijing.

"There are also concerns about predictability of supply chains ... We also need to ​agree on the meetings of various mechanisms and platforms as per our mutual ⁠priorities," Jaishankar said on X. "Peace and tranquillity in the border areas is obviously the prerequisite for ​normal ties," Jaishankar added after the meeting, held on the sidelines of a regional gathering in ​the Philippine capital of Manila.

He maintained that bilateral ties need constant attention. "Since October 2024, both sides have engaged to ensure that important objective. This will continue to need our constant attention." It is pertinent to note that bilateral trade volume between the two nations has also reached a new high. Wang said China is willing to engage in more high-level exchanges, step up economic, trade and media cooperation, as well as "promote correct mutual understanding" between both countries' peoples.
