Oscars 2026: Indian films that couldn't make to this year's nominations

The 98th Academy Awards (Oscars 2026) have once again sparked excitement and debate among movie fans worldwide.

While global cinema continues to push boundaries, Indian films faced a familiar challenge: eligibility without nomination.

India compiled a list of about 24 films for official Oscars 2026 submission (for Best International Feature), however, despite a growing presence on the international stage, none of them make it to the final nomination list. Here are some of the top ones.

1. 'Homebound' - India’s official entry

India’s official submission for Best International Feature Film was Homebound, directed by Neeraj Ghaywan.

The film explores friendship and social issues and garnered praise at international film festivals.

It was shortlisted among the top 15 films in its category. Despite strong critical reception and global visibility, it did not secure a final nomination.

2. 'Kantara: Chapter 1'

A culturally rooted action-drama that blends folklore and environmental themes, Kantara: Chapter 1 gained international attention for its visual storytelling and music.

It qualified for Best Picture eligibility, meaning it met Academy requirements, but did not make the final nomination list.

Though fans celebrated its eligibility as a milestone for Kannada cinema reaching global audiences.

3. 'Tanvi The Great'

A socially conscious Hindi drama exploring family dynamics and women’s empowerment, Tanvi The Great garnered attention for its strong performances and festival presence.

The film was eligible for Best Picture consideration but despite meeting the eligibility criteria, it did not receive a nomination.

4. 'Mahavatar Narsimha'

An ambitious animated project drawing on Indian mythology, this film was eligible in general categories, including Best Animated Feature, but did not make the final cut.

Its recognition highlighted growing interest in Indian animated storytelling at the international level.

5. 'Tourist Family'

A Tamil-language comedy-drama about family and travel adventures, this masterpiece was eligible for Best Picture consideration.

Though the film showcased regional Indian cinema to a global audience, it ultimately did not earn a nomination.

6. 'Pushpa 2'

Pushpa 2's massive popularity, high production values, and international attention made it eligible for general categories like Best Picture or technical awards (cinematography, music, sound). However, it couldn't make it way to the nominations list.

7. 'The Bengal Files'

Recognized for its tight screenplay, engaging narrative, and strong performances, The Bengal Files was eligible for Best Picture or screenplay categories. Unfortunately, it fell short and missed being a part of this year's Oscars nominations.
