Oscars 2024: 'Oppenheimer' or 'Barbie', who shall dominate the biggest awards night of the year?

The globe is all set to glue themselves on their seats as the 2024 Oscar ceremony is all set to happen next weekend, with two of the most acclaimed and successful films, Barbie and Oppenheimer, dominating the night with 8 and 13 nominations respectively. Christopher Nolan's film has been dominating a majority of the award ceremonies so far, and it's expected they would walk away with the honours at the biggest night of the year too.

As for Barbie, this comedy that blends fantasy with realism brimmed with colorful palettes, idiosyncratic characters, extraordinarily bizarre situations, and effortless leading performances. And tucked beneath the fluff and froth was a message about empowering women and the idea of independence that was hit for many and miss for some.

The Oscar snub

Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling starrer Barbie turned out to be the biggest box office blockbuster of 2023 by raking in over $1 billion globally. The film fetched 8 nominations at the Oscars, however, the actress and Greta Gerwig were not nominated in the categories of Best Actress and Best Director, which created uproar on social media.

Margot finally opened up on the snub while joining her Barbie co-stars for the SAG-AFTRA discussion and said that the director deserved a nomination. “There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed. Obviously, I think Greta should be nominated as a director. What she did is a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing. What she pulled off, it really is. But it’s been an incredible year for all the films,” the actress told Variety.

As expected, Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” and Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” were prominently represented among the finalists in many categories, including score and sound, as was Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest.” Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” also advanced in makeup, visual effects and score and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” in visual effects, song and score.
