Netflix's 'Murder Mubarak' director Homi Adajania: 'Not even Naseeruddin Shah, Saif Ali Khan, Dimple Kapadia asked me if…'
The director has made many idiosyncratic films in his career and has spoken about working with big stars for his projects

Homi Adajania is known for helming films like Being Cyrus, Finding Fanny, Angrezi Medium, and more recently Netflix’s Murder Mubarak. While speaking to Cyrus Broacha, the filmmaker spoke about his early years in the industry and bringing on board some of the biggest names in the business.
He recalled, “Nobody asked me if I had done a film before. Neither Saif nor Naseeruddin Shahor Dimple Kapadia asked me if I had made a movie before. They assumed that I was an ad filmmaker. They didn’t know I was sitting in my lungi, on a jetty, in Lakshwadeep catching fish.”
He added, “I am a decent storyteller and I get very enthused during the narration. I think because of my narration they had a clear idea of what I exactly wanted from the film. I had a story but no technical knowledge. In the ad space, I had only delved into the creative part with a little bit of editing experience and not know anything about the technical aspect of the process and a huge amount of time had passed since I did that.”
‘ Murder Mubarak ’ ventures into uncharted territory for Sara, showcasing her in a glamorous avatar, a departure from her previous roles. The film marks a significant collaboration with filmmaker Homi Adajania, renowned for his distinctive storytelling style.
Adajania shared insights into working with Sara and drew intriguing parallels with her father, Saif Ali Khan. He expressed, “Sara has a lot of Saif’s wittiness. He thinks really fast and he’s extremely funny. And why I’ve loved working with Saif also has been because I think we are pretty much on the same wavelength we don’t have to complete sentences we get each other’s horribly bizarre dark humour and I found that it was the same with Sara.”
Highlighting the effortless camaraderie between them, Homi emphasized, “We got each other, there’s no explaining to do. We didn’t have to know each other for that long. So I think it’s the sharpness of Saif, she’s a very smart girl.”
