Dia Mirza goes global with sustainable fashion goals at the SDG Summit

At a time when more and more Indian celebrities are creating awareness about craftsmanship and extending support to local artisans, actress Dia Mirza has been one of those torchbearers when it comes to backing homegrown brands. Time and again, the Bollywood diva has expressed her pride in handcrafted Indian ensembles, emphasising that they are not just sustainable but also represent the glory of India. Dia Mirza recently attended the United Nations General Assembly - the SDG Summit, where she not only advocated for sustainable fashion but also carried the same message by choosing some handcrafted looks for the event.

In a video shared on her Instagram handle, Dia Mirza noted how she proudly represented India wearing the message of sustainability courtesy of homegrown labels rooted in eco-sensitivity. In the video, she shared how everyone at the UNHQ enquired about her outfits, praising her look. "This shows the power of artisans and centuries-old wisdom that shines through," she says.

Dia Mirza's sustainable outfits at SDG Summit

For her first outfit, Dia Mirza chose a handcrafted handloom Kantha jacket with a dress from designer Urvashi Kaur. The actress shared details about her outfit and the local fabrics. Second, she went for a red-coloured contemporary outfit crafted out of South Indian silk by designer Divya Mehta. The outfit has bandhani motifs all over it.

The third one shows Dia dressed in a checkered dress by EKA Design Studio. "This joyful statement of sustainability was made from 100 per cent Merino wool yarn and handwoven in Amritsar on the jacquard loom," the actress noted.

Along with the video, the actress shared a long caption and wrote, "Here is some #MondayMotivation to choose handcrafted, local designers who are empowering artisans and preserving centuries-old craft."

Earlier in 2023, while attending the SDG Summit in New York, Mirza said, "It is time to personalise the Sustainable Development Goals, which means to help individuals understand that the SDGs are not just for governments, policymakers, and industries to make their own. The SDGs have to become personal to each of us. Individuals have the extraordinary power to fulfil the promise of a healthy, progressive, and peaceful world for everyone, everywhere."
