Volkswagen India will begin emissions recall with last gen Skoda Superb

It's been nine months since German automobile giant Volkswagen Group announced that it would recall all of its diesel cars involved in its emissions scandal. The recall would involve multiple models across brands like Audi, Skoda and Volkswagen and we now know that the Skoda Superb will be the first car to kickstart the recall process in India.The total number of cars under the Volkswagen Group in India stands at 323,700 lakh. While Volkswagen earlier attributed the delay with approvals from the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), it has now been confirmed that the process has begun.The first car in the Volkswagen Group's India range would be the older generation of the Skoda Superb that was discontinued back in 2015. The model is powered by the same 2.0-litre EA 189 diesel engine that is directly involved with the emissions scandal.According to Overdrive Volkswagen will only be updating the software of the old Skoda Superb, which the company claims will not affect the vehicle's performance or safety. Owners of the said model will be contacted by dealers or Skoda itself.While things work out to be simpler in India, (for now) out in the US and European markets, Volkswagen had fitted its engines with an actual cheat device that would let is clear emission norms. The recall process for these vehicles will take quite some time and the German automotive giant is in talks with environmental regulators over what would be the fastest and best way to fix its vehicles in those markets. The Skoda Superb in India is just the first of many recalls to come.
