Tata Sierra achieves top 5-Star score in BNCAP safety evaluation

Tata’s latest addition to the SUV segment, the Sierra recently went through its BNCAP safety test. The Sierra moniker has been brought back to life after 35 years since its first outing in 1991, and its latest variation was put against the barrier. The results revealed that the SUV scored a 5-star safety rating along with a score of 31.14 points out of 32  in the adult occupant safety and 44.73 out of 49 in the child occupant safety protection tests. These ratings are applicable to all variants of the Sierra.

​In the frontal Offset deformable barrier test, Sierra was able to offer the occupants good protection to the head, neck, pelvis, thighs, and feet. The test identified that the protection to the  chest and tibiae were adequate only. All the critical parts of the co- driver, except the right Tibia  were regarded to offer the occupants good protection.

Beyond the Frontal offset deformable test, in both the side movable deformable barrier test and side pole impact tests, the critical parts  of the driver and co-driver, such as head, chest, abdomen, and pelvis, received good protection.

Tata Sierra BNCAP child occupant protection results

Both the child seats during the child occupant safety test  were set to a rearward facing direction in the Child Occupant safety test. The 18-month-old child dummy scored 7.73 out of 8 points in the frontal crash test, while the 3-year-old dummy scored 8 points out of 8 points . Meanwhile , both dummies scored 4 out of 4 points in the side impact crash test.

The Sierra has been able to achieve 23.73 out of 24 points for the dynamic score and a full 12 out of 12 in the cross score. But the vehicle lost 4 points in the vehicle assessment score. The overall child occupant score came to 44.73 out of 49 points.

Safety Features on offers

The Sierra is on offer with standard safety features such as a safety kit like 6 airbags, all wheel disc brakes , rear parking sensors , electronic parking brakes with auto hold capabilities. Beyond that, the SUV also gets auto hold, traction control, and ABS with EBD. Trims that sit higher in the range are also on offer with a 360-degree camera, level 2 ADAS auto dimming ORVm and blind spot monitoring features.

The Sierra competes with the likes of Hyundai Creta , Kia Seltos , Maruti Grand Vitara, Toyota Hyryder, Honda Elevate, and Skoda Kushaq. The Sierra has been priced from Rs 11.49 lakh and goes all the way up to Rs 21.29 lakh.

​Power and Specs​

The Sierra is powered by a 1.5 litre naturally aspirated petrol engine that makes close to 106hp and 145nm of torque, and along with that, a Turbo petrol engine that churns out 165 hp and 255 nm of peak torque. For users who seek a Diesel unit, the Sierra is also on offer with a 1.5 litre turbo diesel  mill that develops 118 bhp and up to 280 NM; both of these engines are available with a manual and automatic gearbox.
