Nvidia ties up with Nissan, BYD in race to manufacture autonomous vehicles
Nvidia has recently stuck a deal with a few auto makers, including BYD, Geely, Isuzu and Nissan. The deal amalgamates all the necessary ancillaries such as chips, computers and software necessary for the development of level 4 autonomous vehicles.

Autonomous vehicles are considered as the next profound step in the genesis of conventional vehicles. Automakers as well as tech giants have been grappling with the idea of churning out self driven cars that can reinvent the wheel, quite literally.
Moving ahead with the same idea, Nvidia, which has already been exploring the possibilities of manufacturing an autonomous vehicle, has added BYD and Geely to its robotaxi program.
At its GTX conference, Nvidia announced that BYD, Geely, Isuzu and Nissan would be adopting Nvidia’s Hyperion Platform. The platform amalgamates all the necessary ancillaries such as chips, computers and software necessary for the development of level 4 autonomous vehicles.
BYD has already been using Nvidia chips in its manually driven vehicles, and under the new agreement, the brand would move ahead to use these chips to manufacture next- generation Level 4 vehicles as well. Beyond BYD, Geely has been using Nvidia’s Thor chips in its new lineup of Zeeker vehicles.
Nvidia’s pursuit to lead in autonomous vehicle production
Nvidia is seeking to raise its profile as a manufacturer of vehicles that are self driven. But even after funneling a large expanse of its capital into the auto business, it still stands tiny compared to that of the competitors. The chipmaker still rakes in billions from its AI initiatives, its third quarter revenues in the year 2025 stood at $51.2 billion, while its automotive division was able to accrue a meagre 1.2 % of the total haul of $592 million.
Beyond supplying EV ancillaries to Chinese manufacturers, Nvidia will also be selling its Hyperion platform to Nissan. The Japanese automaker has been using the robotaxi software that has been developed by Wayve; beyond that, the brand is also working in coalition with Isuzu and Tier IV to design level 4 buses that use its next gen Drive AGX Thor-based system on a chip.
How the US and China’s trade tariffs might impact the relationship
US and China have not been amiable trade partners in the recent past, the burgeoning pressure of trade tariffs has been the reason behind the decline in business relations. Amid such uncertainty, Invidia’s partnership with Chinese auto manufacturers marks a change. NVIDIA-manufactured chips being used in AI models have been the subject of intense negotiations between the two countries. The Trump administration has recently approved the sale of Nvidia’s H200 chips to Chinese companies.
Early mover advantage along with the presence of rare earth metals in abundance, has given China an upper hand in EV production. The deal between Nvidia, BYD and Geely is expected to accelerate the autonomous vehicle manufacturing in the US and might even help the US tackle the lead China professes over it. To further add to the changes in the overall industry, lawmakers in Congress have pushed to pass stalled-autonomous vehicle legislation, on the premise that these might help the nation step ahead of China in EV production.
Lyft and Uber to initiate the next chapter in Robotaxi’s
Beyond manufacturing giants such as Isuzu, Nissan, and Geely, LYFT (American Ridesharing company) will also be using Nvidia's technology to bolster machine learning. NVIDIA will also be collaborating with Lyft’s main rival Uber in the development of a global network of robotaxis, aiming to deploy a fleet of 100,00 vehicles by the year 2027. The chipmaker recently provided an update stating that it plans to spread across 28 markets and four continents by 2028, while services are expected to start in Los Angeles and San Francisco early on.
Robotaxis and safety concerns
With the prospects of new Robotaxis hitting the road, people are concerned about the safety, as early autonomous vehicles such as Tesla’s level 2 enabled vehicles have had a veritable past of crashes. Waymo’s vehicles have been recorded violating traffic laws around school buses and getting stuck at intersections leading to trails of traffic jams.
Nvidia seeks to solve all these issues with the launch of the all new product Halos OS, this will help level 4 partners to build safety systems that will ensure passenger safety amid all circumstances. The Halo OS will work as a “safety guardrail” for autonomous driving systems and will intervene if AI models fail or are about to make an unsafe decision.
Speaking about the new safety systems Ali Kani VP and General manager said “We help our partners build a safe architecture that we can decompose down for every function and make sure that if any computer or any sensor fails, the system is still architected to take you to a safe place.”
