Nissan’s Carlos Ghosn whistleblower Hari Nada hangs his cape, retires 7 years after 2018 incident

Carlos Ghosn has had an extensive past with Nissan, from being credited as the saviour of the Japanese brand through its financial doldrums to an epic fall and arrest in 2018, Carlos Ghosn has been through it all.  His arrest came after Hari Nada, a member of the top brass at Nissan, revealed his clandestine motives to misuse his position in the company. In a recent update, Hari has now decided to step down from his position at Nissan.

After continuing his run for 7 years after leading a full-scale revelation about Ghosn, Hari nada has finally decided to hang up his cape at the age of 61. He will step down from April 1 as corporate executive for special projects, in addition to a series of new changes that will be taking place at Nissan from March 17.

Nada was closely associated with Ghosn’s arrest at Tokyo’s Haneda airport. Ghosn's arrest at that time turned into a 140-day run within the lockup in Tokyo. His arrest led to a break in the long-standing alliance between Renault and Nissan, and further weakened Nissan's position in the Automotive market leaving it struggling.

​Suspicions, and Renault’s increasing stake in Nissan

Before Nissan Ghosn had already had a past with Renault, he was regarded as the rescuer who helped Renault through its rough patch in the late 1990’s. But even after his past at Renault, he was considered an outsider at Nissan. His ascension to lead the top brass at Nissan had already brought him into the limelight, which did not sit well with Nissan’s existing leaders.​

Both Nissan and Renault were linked under a strategic alliance first forged in the year 1999. In the year 2016, Mitsubishi joined in the alliance, and soon the group was  producing more than 10 million vehicles a year. Ghosn was managing the whole affiliation from the top.  Since the French government is a stake holder in Renault by the year 2015, it had managed to double its voting rights  in the company and significantly increase its influence  over the boardroom decisions.

This meant that Political decisions that were taken in France  had a significant impact on Nissan in Japan. A renewable mandate for Ghosn, giving him another 4 years as the chairman and Chief executive of Renault and Nissan. The top brass in Japan were wary of the new decisions and how Renault had an increasing stake in the alliance and Ghosn was leading these changes while planning to  bring Fiat in to the alliance in the coming few years.

Charges against Ghosn

Charges against him included breaking Japanese law by under-reporting his salary over a four-year period to the tune of $44m. These allegations were further extended , taking the total of the overall impact on the company of around $80m. A few years after these allegations a slew of other accusations regarding “ breach of trust” were also added. The once epochal leader was accused of  abusing his official position for personal gains, by temporarily shifting personal investment losses to Nissan  and using company funds to lead trails of money to a Saudi business associate.

How was Hari Nada involved in the investigations?

Har Nada was central to the whole investigation. A senior Vice President at Nissan, he had previously worked closely with Ghosn and Kelly. In the year 2018, he revealed a slew of details about Ghosn's financial dealings to the authorities and  began working with them to investigate further under the wraps. Nada took a  plea bargain  from Tokyo prosecutors  to testify against Ghosn and Kelly.
