NHAI to deploy AI dashcams monitoring on 40,000 Km of highways: What it is and how it works

National Highways Authority of India is planning an advanced AI-powered monitoring system across nearly 40,000 km of national highways. The aim behind the new change has been to establish an efficient and data-driven monitoring system. This system will work with the aid of Dashcam Analytics Services, which use Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to monitor road conditions.

High-resolution dashboard cameras will be installed on route patrol vehicles (RPVs). These will carry out regular surveys across highway stretches, capturing video footage and images that will be analysed using AI-based models.

The authority has highlighted that the system is capable of identifying more than 30 types of defects and anomalies automatically. This will include common issues such as potholes, cracks, and surface wear on roads. The new system will reduce the reliance on manual inspections and help detect problems faster, enabling quicker maintenance action.

Beyond road quality, the system will monitor lane markings, crash barriers, streetlights, and road signage. Beyond that, its increased vigil will be able to encounter unauthorized median openings, illegal hoardings, and obstructions with ease.

The system will streamline the development process as well, giving the support staff the exact location of where help is needed.

Night-Time Surveys

To strengthen safety checks, NHAI will also conduct periodic checks at night to assess visibility and identify if any issues persist for users. The entire system will be supported by a centralised digital platform that features dedicated modules for data management, AI analytics, and interactive dashboards. This platform will allow officials to track road conditions in real time, compare data over time, and monitor the progress of repairs.

Implementation

For smoother implementation, NHAI has divided the country into five zones, enabling better monitoring and quicker response to issues flagged by the system. The authority aims to shift to a proactive approach in highway maintenance. The data centres will allow real-time data automation and ensure that the government is able to upkeep road conditions.
