US attacks Iran for ninth straight night, teeters on brink of all-out war after soldier killed in Iraq

The US military launched a fresh wave of attacks on Iran for the ninth consecutive night, saying the operations are aimed at weakening Iranian military capabilities used to target commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, while Tehran announced what it described as a retaliatory strike in Syria and reported further attacks on critical infrastructure.

US Central Command (Centcom) said the latest round of military operations began on Sunday and would continue targeting Iranian military assets.

"The strikes will continue degrading Iranian military capabilities used to attack commercial vessels and civilian mariners transiting the Strait of Hormuz," Centcom said in a post on X.

Iran claims attack in Syria

Iran's Revolutionary Guards said on Monday they had carried out what they described as a "surprise attack" on an enemy special operations command centre in Syria.

According to a statement reported by state news agency IRNA and published on Telegram, the Guards announced "a surprise attack on the enemy special operations command center in the Al-Tanf region of Syria in revenge for the blood of martyred soldiers of Iranshahr", referring to the city in southeast Iran.

Iran said the United States had attacked an under-construction nuclear power plant.

A senior Iranian commander warned that “any aggression or barbarism will be met with a decisive and devastating response” from the country's armed forces.

US reports military casualties

Amid escalating tensions, Centcom said one US service member was killed in Iraq on Saturday. The announcement came a day after two US soldiers were killed, one went missing and several others were wounded during an Iranian attack on a military facility in Jordan.

According to US Central Command (Centcom), the service member was killed during "a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance" recovered from a downed Iranian attack drone. The incident also left another service member injured.

Centcom also said search teams at the site of Friday's attack in Jordan had recovered "unidentified remains". "An examination process to verify the remains is ongoing," the command added.

The US has issued a security alert warning that Iran could target unspecified locations in central Manama, Bahrain's capital. In an advisory shared by TravelGov, US authorities urged American citizens to remain vigilant, comply with instructions from local authorities and consult the latest security guidance issued by the US Embassy, citing information indicating a possible Iranian threat.
