Russian FM Lavrov calls on PM Modi, discusses Ukraine and West Asia

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Thursday called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, with the two leaders discussing regional and global developments including the conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia, while India reiterated its consistent position in favour of dialogue and diplomacy.

Lavrov, who is visiting India to attend the Brics Foreign Ministers’ meeting, also briefed Modi on the progress made in bilateral cooperation since the prime minister’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin during the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit in December 2025.

"Pleased to receive Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Thanked him for an update on the progress on various facets of our Special & Privileged Strategic Partnership. We also exchanged views on various regional and global issues, including situation in Ukraine and West Asia. Reiterated our consistent support for efforts aimed at peaceful resolution of conflicts," PM Modi posted on X.

In a statement, the Prime Minister’s Office said the two leaders exchanged views on “various regional and global issues of mutual interest, including the situation in Ukraine and West Asia.”

During the talks, Modi reiterated India’s long-held position that diplomatic engagement and dialogue remain essential for resolving international conflicts and maintaining regional stability.

The prime minister also asked Lavrov to convey his warm greetings to President Putin, the PMO said.

India has maintained close engagement with both Moscow and Western countries since the start of the Ukraine conflict, repeatedly calling for peace through negotiations while continuing strategic and economic ties with Russia.

Lavrov’s visit comes amid intensified global diplomatic activity surrounding the wars in Ukraine and West Asia, as Brics foreign ministers gather to discuss geopolitical and economic challenges facing the grouping.

On Thursday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in New Delhi, with discussions covering trade, energy, connectivity and other key areas under the India-Russia “Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership.”
