The United States launched airstrikes against Iran on Saturday, describing the operation as a move to "punish" Tehran after reporting its first military fatalities since hostilities resumed with the Islamic republic.

The escalation followed the deaths of two US service members in Jordan, where US Central Command (Centcom) said they were killed on Friday while they "defended against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks." Centcom added that another service member remained missing in action.

Reacting to the fatalities, US President Donald Trump called the deaths “a very sad thing”, adding that “we’re never allowing Iran to have a nuclear weapon”.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei dismissed Trump’s position, saying the US president’s signature was “worthless and invalid” and accusing Washington of repeatedly violating the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed last month.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Supreme Leader vowed to teach the Americans "unforgettable lessons" as Tehran expanded its retaliation across the Gulf, saying recent US attacks had struck an airport, a railway station and bridges.

Iraqi media reported that the US consulate in Erbil activated its air defence systems during drone attacks, as Iran also carried out fresh strikes in Jordan.
