At least eight people were killed and more than 20 others injured after a freight train collided with a public bus at a railway crossing in Bangkok on Saturday, according to the Associated Press.

Thai media reported that the accident occurred late in the afternoon near an airport rail link station in central Bangkok. The city’s emergency services agency, the Erawan Medical Center, confirmed the fatalities and said several injured victims had been taken to hospitals for treatment.

Thailand’s Deputy Transport Minister Siripong Angkasakulkiat told reporters at the scene that all bodies recovered so far were found inside the bus. He said authorities were still trying to determine the exact number of passengers onboard at the time of the crash.

Responding to questions about reports that the bus may have stopped on the tracks and whether the crossing barriers malfunctioned, Siripong said the cause of the incident remained under investigation.

Videos shared on social media showed several vehicles waiting at the railway crossing moments before the collision. The freight train was then seen crashing into an orange public bus and dragging nearby vehicles along the tracks. The bus later caught fire following the impact.

Some clips also showed motorcycles and riders being thrown onto the road during the collision. Later visuals from the scene showed rescue workers entering the charred remains of the bus after firefighters managed to contain the blaze.

Police and rescue officials said the accident involved the freight train, a passenger bus, cars and motorcycles.

Emergency teams, including firefighters, police and rescue personnel, rushed to the site soon after the incident was reported. Rescue workers were seen pulling injured passengers and motorists from the wreckage as crews worked to stop the fire from spreading further.

Officials said at least eight people died in the accident while 25 others sustained injuries of varying severity. The injured were shifted to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims.

The fire was later brought under control following an extensive operation. Rescue officials said cooling operations continued at the site while teams searched damaged vehicles for additional victims. Authorities also carried out gas ventilation measures to reduce the risk of secondary explosions and further fire hazards.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident to determine the exact cause of the crash and whether negligence or mechanical failure played a role.
