The United States has confirmed the deployment of uncrewed drone boats, known as Global Autonomous Reconnaissance Craft, in operations linked to tensions with Iran. These vessels, capable of remote or autonomous navigation, have logged over 450 hours at sea. Similar technologies have been used in other conflicts, including Ukraine’s attacks on Russian naval assets in the Black Sea. In the Gulf, sea drones have been linked to attacks on oil tankers, with reports of explosive boats disguised as fishing vessels. Iran has also alleged the presence of explosive devices near a military site, though this remains unverified. The conflict reflects a shift towards smaller, autonomous military systems.
