YouTube tests AI-powered search tool for conversational results and smarter video discovery
YouTube is testing a new AI-powered search feature that delivers conversational results, combining videos, text and follow-up prompts. Initially available to select Premium users in the US, the tool reflects Google’s broader push to integrate AI across its platforms, transforming how users discover and interact with content.

Searching on YouTube has long been a straightforward affair: type a query, scroll through thumbnails, and hope the algorithm understands what you mean. But as artificial intelligence reshapes how people interact with information, even something as familiar as search is being reimagined.
Now, YouTube is experimenting with a new AI-powered search experience that aims to feel less like browsing and more like a conversation. The feature, currently in testing, signals a shift towards a more interactive and intuitive way of discovering content.
YouTube’s AI-powered search tool: How will it work?
The new feature allows users to type natural language prompts directly into the search bar and select an option labelled “Ask YouTube”. Instead of returning a simple list of videos, the platform generates a combination of video recommendations and text-based responses.
The idea is to make search more dynamic. Users can ask complex or open-ended questions and receive structured answers, then refine their queries with follow-up prompts, much like interacting with a chatbot.
For instance, a query such as planning a road trip would not just surface travel vlogs. Instead, it could produce a detailed itinerary alongside a curated mix of long-form videos, Shorts and explanatory text. This blend of formats is designed to give users both quick insights and deeper exploration options in one place.
The technology behind this experience is powered by Google Gemini, part of Google’s expanding suite of AI tools. Gemini already underpins several of Google’s products, from its chatbot to AI-generated search summaries, and its integration into YouTube marks a natural extension of that ecosystem.
For now, access to the feature is limited. It is being rolled out to Premium subscribers aged over 18 in the United States who use English-language search on desktop. However, YouTube has indicated that it plans to gradually expand testing, potentially bringing the tool to a wider audience over time.
Expected pricing
While the new AI search feature itself is part of an experimental rollout, it is currently tied to YouTube Premium. Earlier this month, the platform increased the price of its individual Premium plan to $16 per month.
The subscription already offers benefits such as ad-free viewing and background playback, allowing videos to continue running while users switch between apps. The addition of AI-driven features could further strengthen its value proposition, particularly as platforms compete to offer more intelligent and personalised experiences.
As Google continues embedding AI across its services, YouTube is likely to see more such innovations. The move reflects a broader trend in tech: search is no longer just about finding content, but about understanding intent, and responding in a way that feels almost human.
