Xiaomi moves to strengthen Its EV Portfolio with extended-range vehicle filing

Chinese electric vehicle maker Xiaomi has reportedly taken the first step toward expanding its automotive portfolio by filing regulatory documents for an Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (EREV). The development came to light through a notice published by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) on Wednesday.

The proposed addition is currently subject to regulatory approval and a public comment period that will remain open until June 17.

Xiaomi has rapidly emerged as a strong challenger to established EV brands such as Tesla and BYD. The company currently offers the battery-electric SU7 sedan and the YU7 SUV, both of which have helped it gain significant traction in China's highly competitive electric vehicle market.

The latest filing points to a new series of vehicles that would fall under the Extended-Range Electric Vehicle category. Unlike traditional battery-electric vehicles, EREVs feature a small gasoline-powered engine that acts as a generator to recharge the battery when its charge runs low. This setup allows drivers to travel longer distances without relying entirely on public charging infrastructure, helping alleviate range anxiety during long journeys.

Over the past year, Xiaomi has successfully established itself as a serious player in the automotive sector, largely driven by the popularity of the SU7. The company's growing presence has placed it in direct competition with major automakers including Tesla and BYD.

Xiaomi is not alone in pursuing the EREV opportunity. Several Chinese automakers have already found success in the hybrid and extended-range segments, which have gained popularity among consumers seeking a balance between electric driving and long-distance convenience.

While Xiaomi has yet to disclose official details regarding pricing, specifications, or a launch timeline, the regulatory filing signals the company's intention to broaden its vehicle lineup and tap into another fast-growing segment of the automotive market.
