WWDC 2026: Apple plans biggest Siri overhaul since its 2011 debut, here's what to expect

Apple is reportedly preparing the most significant redesign of Siri since the assistant debuted more than a decade ago, with plans to turn it into a fully fledged AI companion capable of handling complex tasks, maintaining conversations and working across the company's ecosystem of devices.

According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the project, known internally as "Campo", sits at the heart of Apple's broader artificial intelligence strategy. Rather than functioning primarily as a voice-controlled assistant, the new Siri is expected to become a central hub for productivity, search, communication and everyday tasks across iPhone, iPad and Mac devices.

The overhaul comes as Apple seeks to catch up with AI rivals that have rapidly expanded the capabilities of conversational assistants in recent years.

The revamped Siri is expected to gain a much deeper understanding of user context, allowing it to draw information from emails, notes, calendars, contacts and other personal data stored across Apple devices.

Users may be able to ask Siri to perform multi-step tasks that previously required several separate actions. For example, the assistant could draft emails using information gathered from previous conversations, web sources and calendar entries, while also helping users schedule meetings and identify potential conflicts in their diaries.

Apple is also redesigning how Siri appears on modern iPhones. Instead of occupying the edges of the display, the assistant is expected to live within the Dynamic Island interface, providing a more integrated experience for voice interactions and searches.

A new "Search or Ask" interface is also reportedly in development. Accessible through a swipe gesture, the feature would give users a single destination for launching apps, sending messages, creating calendar entries, searching the web and interacting with Siri through either voice or text.

For users who prefer chatbot-style interactions, Apple is said to be developing a dedicated Siri application for iOS, iPadOS and macOS. The app would store previous conversations, synchronise them across devices through iCloud and support file uploads, images and ongoing discussions in a format similar to existing AI chatbot platforms.

One of the most notable changes reportedly under consideration is Apple's willingness to embrace third-party AI models.

While ChatGPT is already integrated into Apple software, the company is said to be testing support for additional AI assistants, including Google's Gemini and Anthropic's Claude. Users may eventually be able to switch between different AI models depending on the task they want to perform.

Reports also suggest that Apple is relying on Google technology for parts of the new Siri infrastructure, including cloud-based processing. The arrangement could raise questions about privacy, an area where Apple has traditionally positioned itself as an industry leader.

In another major shift, Siri is expected to become far more conversational and capable of handling multiple instructions within a single request. Users may be able to combine several tasks, such as checking the weather, scheduling an appointment and sending a message, without needing separate prompts.

Apple is also reportedly developing its own AI-powered search engine within Siri, allowing users to receive direct answers, summaries and visual results without being redirected to external search services.

Apple is expected to provide more details about its AI plans during WWDC 2026, which begins on June 8 at Apple Park in Cupertino, California.

The keynote is scheduled to start at 10am Pacific Time (10:30pm IST) and will be streamed live through Apple's website, the Apple TV app and the company's official YouTube channel.

While Apple has not officially confirmed all of the reported Siri features, the event is widely expected to showcase the company's next phase of AI development and offer a clearer picture of how Siri will evolve in the years ahead.
