WhatsApp may soon let messages vanish after you read them

WhatsApp appears to be doubling down on privacy. The messaging platform is reportedly testing a new disappearing message feature that could make conversations feel far more temporary, while Meta simultaneously expands private AI chat experiences across its apps.

The upcoming feature, called “After reading”, is designed to automatically erase messages shortly after they have been opened by the recipient. Combined with Meta’s recently announced Incognito Chat for AI conversations, the updates suggest the company is increasingly focusing on private interactions that leave little or no digital trace behind.

WhatsApp’s new feature: After reading

According to reports from WABetaInfo, some WhatsApp beta testers can now access a new disappearing message option labelled “After reading”. The feature adds another layer to WhatsApp’s existing disappearing messages system, but with a more precise trigger: the countdown begins only after the recipient actually reads the message.

Unlike current disappearing messages that vanish after a fixed duration regardless of whether they are opened, the new system changes how timing works entirely. Messages stay intact until the recipient opens the chat. Once viewed, the selected timer begins counting down before the content disappears automatically.

Users can reportedly choose from three different timers: five minutes, one hour or 12 hours. After the selected duration ends, the message is deleted from the chat automatically.

There is also a fallback mechanism built into the feature. If the recipient never opens the message, WhatsApp will reportedly remove it after 24 hours anyway.

The functionality is currently being tested on both Android and iOS beta versions of WhatsApp. While the feature resembles disappearing messages already available on platforms like Snapchat and Instagram’s Vanish Mode, WhatsApp’s version appears more focused on giving users tighter control over exactly when conversations disappear.

For users discussing sensitive topics or sharing temporary information, the feature could reduce the anxiety around forgotten messages lingering in chats indefinitely.

However, like many disappearing-message systems, questions around screenshots, backups and forwarded content are likely to remain important concerns once the feature reaches wider audiences.

WhatsApp Incognito mode

The disappearing messages update arrives shortly after Meta announced another privacy-focused feature: Incognito Chat with Meta AI.

The optional feature creates a separate, temporary conversation space where users can interact privately with Meta’s AI assistant without retaining chat history. According to Meta, the feature is designed for discussions involving personal subjects such as finances, work, relationships or health.

Unlike standard chatbot interactions that often store conversation history to improve future responses, Incognito Chat starts fresh every time. Conversations are not saved after the session ends, and messages disappear automatically by default.

Meta says the feature is powered by its “private processing” technology, which processes AI requests inside an isolated and protected environment separate from the company’s main servers. The company has emphasised that neither Meta nor WhatsApp can access the contents of these conversations while they are being processed.

The feature will gradually roll out across WhatsApp and the Meta AI app in the coming months.

Meta is also reportedly working on a side-chat AI feature that could allow users to privately consult the AI assistant inside existing conversations without exposing chat contents to others.
