When Donald Trump arrived in Beijing for talks with Xi Jinping, the official focus was trade. But behind the elaborate ceremonies and diplomatic language, the real centrepiece of the summit appeared to be technology.

The presence of some of America’s most influential tech leaders, particularly Elon Musk and Jensen Huang, signalled that AI infrastructure, semiconductors and advanced computing have now become inseparable from US-China economic diplomacy.

Even without a major breakthrough deal, the summit revealed how deeply the two superpowers remain tied together through technology, despite years of trade tensions and export controls.

Why Nvidia and Tesla mattered more than diplomats

One of the most closely watched moments of the visit came before negotiations even began. Musk reportedly stepped off Air Force One ahead of senior US officials, highlighting the strategic importance of American technology firms in Washington’s engagement with Beijing.

For Tesla, China remains critical. The company’s Shanghai gigafactory is one of its most important production hubs, while Chinese consumers account for a substantial share of global electric vehicle demand.

Meanwhile, Nvidia sits at the heart of the global AI race. Its advanced AI chips power everything from generative AI models to large-scale data centres, making the company central to ongoing tensions between the US and China.

Huang’s appearance drew particular attention because he was reportedly not part of the original delegation list. That fuelled speculation that AI access and semiconductor policy became more prominent in private discussions than public statements suggested.

Trump later hinted at potential Chinese investments involving major technology companies, though no detailed agreements were announced.

The AI race remains the biggest unresolved conflict

Despite the warm rhetoric, the summit produced no major breakthrough on technology restrictions.

The US continues to maintain strict export controls on advanced semiconductors and chipmaking equipment aimed at limiting China’s access to frontier AI capabilities. Beijing, meanwhile, continues pushing for broader access to high-end computing technologies while accusing Washington of attempting to contain its technological rise.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed that discussions around AI guardrails and safety frameworks took place during the summit. However, both governments appear far apart on the broader issue of technological competition.

The tensions extend beyond chips alone. Taiwan remains deeply connected to the dispute because of its dominant role in global semiconductor manufacturing. Xi reportedly described Taiwan as the “most sensitive” issue in US-China relations, warning that mishandling it could push the two nations towards conflict.

Technology is now the real trade war

The summit ultimately reinforced a growing reality: the US-China relationship is no longer defined mainly by tariffs or manufacturing deficits.

Instead, the battle is increasingly centred around who controls the technologies that will shape the next decade, from AI infrastructure and advanced semiconductors to electric vehicles and global computing networks.

Trade negotiations may still provide the diplomatic framework, but technology has clearly become the real arena of strategic competition between Washington and Beijing.
