Thousands of windows devices replaced in schools by MacBook Neo and iPads—Here’s why
A shift toward low-cost Apple laptops in schools and emerging competitive initiatives like Microsoft’s Project Firefly are reshaping the global budget laptop market

One of the go-to choices for students everywhere, Windows laptops and systems that were once widely trusted may now be facing a shift. In a sweeping move, Kansas City Public Schools have purchased more than 4,500 MacBook Neo units for 8th-grade students, making Apple’s low-cost Mac a large-scale choice for education use.
The district is now planning to retire more than 30,000 existing devices over time. This transition highlights a growing trend in the education sector toward cheaper, more efficient classroom laptops, as competition in the market intensifies.
Why are education systems in US going all Apple?
Reports suggest that the move aims to simplify how students and teachers work across devices and help administrators bring users onto a single unified platform. The district is shifting toward an Apple-based setup. Under the plan, older students will receive MacBook Neo laptops, while other users will be provided with iPads and MacBook Airs across different grade levels as the transition continues. This creates a cleaner and more streamlined device ecosystem.
The Neo lineup has helped bring macOS into a lower price range, allowing Apple to compete more directly with cheaper machines. The MacBook Neo gives Apple a lower-cost entry into the education market, where Chromebooks and budget Windows laptops have long held a strong position. While the Neo aims to challenge Windows-based devices, Microsoft is also working on strategies to retain its market share.
Project Firefly
The recently organized Core Series 3 processor launch event in China, along with the announcement of Project Firefly, signals a possible comebackaimed at competing with the MacBook Neo. Project Firefly is an initiative being streamlined to challenge Apple’s MacBook Neo by leveraging China’s smartphone supply chains. By using these manufacturing ecosystems, manufacturers aim to mass-produce Wildcat Lake-powered devices at the lowest possible cost.
Project Firefly would help tech giants move beyond traditional component sourcing and redesign laptop manufacturing by drawing inspiration from the smartphone industry. Standardizing components and designs could allow manufacturers to introduce a universal framework across different brands and models. Factories would be able to produce millions of units at high speed, significantly reducing research, development, and production costs.
Beyond Apple’s MacBook Neo, laptops developed under Project Firefly are also expected to compete with ARM-powered devices and Chromebooks aimed at budget-conscious consumers. If Intel succeeds in delivering high-quality, affordable laptops through Project Firefly, it could give users the option to remain within the x86 ecosystem.
While the Neo lineup may have taken an early lead, the lower-end laptop segment is expected to soon be flooded with similarly specced models from multiple manufacturers.
