Microsoft Build 2026: Tech Giant Unveils Surface RTX Spark Dev Box and New Windows AI APIs
Microsoft unveils the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a compact AI development system capable of running large models locally with up to 1 petaflop of AI compute

Microsoft has kicked off Build 2026 with a strong focus on artificial intelligence, as CEO Satya Nadella steers the developer conference toward new AI model announcements, hardware launches, and a host of new tools and capabilities for developers. From next-generation AI systems and Windows enhancements to specialized developer hardware, here's everything Microsoft has unveiled so far.

Microsoft is expanding Windows AI APIs beyond Copilot+ PCs, adding support for more hardware, including GPU acceleration for Phi Silica and CPU support for features such as Video Super Resolution and Live Captions. The company also introduced a new Speech Recognition API in preview, enabling real-time, on-device speech-to-text processing from microphones, audio streams, and files.
Alongside the API updates, Microsoft unveiled Aion 1.0 Instruct, a next-generation small language model designed for on-device workloads. The model will power tasks such as text summarization, rewriting, intent detection, and accessibility features, while also integrating with Microsoft Edge and being available as open weights.
Microsoft also announced Aion 1.0 Plan, a 14-billion-parameter reasoning and tool-calling model that will arrive in the coming months. Built into Windows, the model is designed to support agentic workflows by enabling applications to reason over user intent, invoke tools, manage files, and coordinate sub-agents directly on local devices.
