Meta is reportedly developing AI smart glasses with always-on sensing, raising fresh privacy concerns.

Building on the success it has achieved with its first two generations of smart glasses, Meta is reportedly testing one of its most controversial ideas yet. Reports from the Financial Times suggest that the tech giant is now working on a new pair of "supersensing" AI glasses. The premise behind these glasses is simple—they would continuously capture the sights and sounds around the wearer.
While Meta believes these always-listening and always-seeing AI glasses could significantly enhance the user experience, they are also likely to become a major privacy nightmare.
Beyond the always-on sensing capabilities, Meta reportedly wants these glasses to evolve into data-capturing devices that collect a wide range of contextual information. This data would eventually serve as the knowledge base for a highly personalised AI assistant. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has previously hinted at such a personal AI agent—one that would stay with users throughout the day and assist them with virtually anything they need.
Unlike a conventional AI assistant that simply responds to spoken queries, this system would have a much deeper awareness of the user's surroundings and context.
Currently, video recording on Meta's smart glasses is indicated by a small LED light, ensuring that people within the camera's field of view can tell when they are being recorded.
However, users across the internet have repeatedly found ways to bypass or disable this recording indicator without alerting others. In response, Meta has reportedly introduced safeguards that can automatically disable the camera altogether if such tampering is detected.
These repeated attempts by users to circumvent Meta's privacy protections—and the company's constant efforts to counter them—highlight just how controversial the idea of always-on "supersensing" wearables could become.
Plans for the supersensing smart glasses
According to the report, the supersensing feature is nearly ready for deployment and could be enabled on Meta's existing lineup of smart glasses through a software update.
One proposal for implementing the system suggests that the data and voice recordings captured by the AI-powered smart glasses would neither be available for users to download nor shared directly with Meta. Instead, metadata extracted from recorded audio clips and images would be processed by Meta AI, allowing it to respond more effectively to user queries.
