Meta unveils Muse Spark 1.1, opens developer preview for its AI model
Meta expands public access to its Muse Spark AI model as it ramps up competition with OpenAI and Anthropic.

After unveiling its first artificial intelligence model under the leadership of AI chief Alexandr Wang, Meta is now rolling out a major update as it intensifies its efforts to compete with rivals OpenAI and Anthropic in the race for AI supremacy.
Meta's recently introduced Muse Spark 1.1 is described as one of the company's "strongest models for agentic and coding work yet." The model is part of Meta's broader vision of delivering "personal superintelligence" to users through advanced AI capabilities.
According to Meta, the upgraded model can write and debug code, use software and external tools, understand text, images and videos, and carry out complex multi-step tasks with minimal human intervention.
Meta first introduced Muse Spark in April as the inaugural text and reasoning model from its Superintelligence Labs team, which was formed last year to close the gap with leading AI rivals. At launch, the company made the model's application programming interface (API) available to a limited group of partners through a private preview.
Meta has now expanded access to the Muse Spark API by making it available in public preview through the Meta Model API for developers in the United States. The company is also rolling out the model in Thinking mode across the Meta AI app and website, with plans to power AI experiences on WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Meta's smart glasses.
The launch follows Meta's recent rollout of Muse Image, the company's first image-generation model developed by Meta Superintelligence Labs, further expanding its portfolio of generative AI tools.
Developers can now register through Meta's developer portal to integrate the model into their applications. According to a Meta spokesperson, select early partners already have access, while new users can join a waitlist and will be granted access gradually over time. For now, Meta is limiting API availability to its own platform instead of distributing it through third-party marketplaces such as OpenRouter.
"This is going to be served on top of the computer infrastructure that we've built," Wang said.
The API rollout marks Meta's second major Muse release this week, underscoring the company's accelerated push to build an integrated AI ecosystem for developers, creators and consumers.
Speaking to Axios, Wang said his long-term vision is to make Meta AI more agentic, enabling it to independently handle tasks such as planning a party or organizing a vacation. He added that Meta's biggest advantage lies in its billions of users and the extensive understanding the company has of their preferences and behavior.
