Meta employee who opted for layoff amid mass cuts raises alarm over worker protection
Former employees of Meta Platforms have shared contrasting perspectives on the company’s layoffs and workplace culture, highlighting both restructuring-driven exits

In the aftermath of recent layoffs at Meta Platforms, a number of former employees have come forward with claims highlighting concerns about workplace culture and the company’s ongoing restructuring efforts.
Recently, Jeremy Bernier, a former Meta engineer, alleged that the company is heavily influenced by Chinese workers, including in its US-based offices. He further claimed that 6 out of the 7 employees laid off from his team were non-Chinese. Following Bernier’s claims, another former employee has now shared a different perspective, stating that she voluntarily chose to be included in the layoffs after acquiring the necessary AI-related skills for her role. She added that her personal ambitions no longer aligned with Meta’s evolving direction.

Meta recently carried out a major round of layoffs affecting around 8,000 employees globally. The company has stated that the cuts are part of a broader restructuring effort aimed at improving efficiency. Julie Bone, who worked as a designer for Facebook in Los Angeles, shared a LinkedIn post announcing her departure after six years at the company.
In her post, Bone explained that she had personally requested to be included in the layoffs, describing it as a decision she had been considering for some time.
Reasons behind her decision to leave Meta
In her LinkedIn post, Bone noted that her personal aspirations and Meta’s long-term direction had gradually diverged. She also said that the timing aligned with her personal circumstances. Additionally, she mentioned that one of her motivations for leaving was the possibility that her voluntary exit might allow another employee to retain their position.
Bone shared that she had learned to use AI tools for drafting ideas and automating repetitive tasks. However, she emphasized that upskilling in AI alone would not eliminate concerns around job security, adding that broader worker protections would require coordinated action. She said she was leaving with deep respect for her colleagues and described her work on brand voice as one of the most meaningful aspects of her role.
Social media reactions
Social media users reacted with mixed views. Some cautioned her about the risks of voluntarily leaving a job in the current market, while others praised her decision to leave on her own terms and wished her well.
These accounts highlight workplace realities that are often less visible within corporate environments. Bone’s case is more measured compared to Bernier’s, whose allegations have drawn wider attention for their claims about workplace exclusion and internal team dynamics.
