MacBook Neo: Is Apple’s low-cost laptop already out?

It’s shaping up to be one of Apple’s busiest launch weeks.

The tech giant has already refreshed much of its hardware lineup, introducing the new iPhone 17e, upgraded iPad Air M4, and the next-generation MacBook Air and MacBook Pro powered by the M5 chip.

But amid all the official announcements, Apple appears to have accidentally leaked a new MacBook model that hasn’t been officially revealed yet.

Is MacBook Neo the rumoured low-cost Apple laptop?

For months, reports have hinted at Apple’s plans to re-enter the affordable laptop segment with a new, stripped-down MacBook.

And now the leak has given fire to this rumour.

The leak surfaced when Apple briefly published a regulatory document on its official website, complying with European Union transparency rules. Although the document, first reported by MacRumours, itself didn’t name the product, its URL contained the reference “MacBook Neo” tied to Apple’s Model A3404.

The timing couldn’t be more suspicious. Apple is holding a hands-on press event on Wednesday, part of what it calls a “special Apple Experience,” and the only rumoured product missing from the company’s spring refresh is the long-anticipated budget MacBook.

Many now believe that the MacBook Neo could be the star of that show, a device designed to open the Mac ecosystem to a wider audience.

MacBook Neo: What to expect

Rumours suggest that the Neo might not use Apple’s M-series chips at all. Instead, it could be powered by a mobile-class processor like the A18 Pro or A19 Pro, the same chips found in Apple’s latest iPhones.

If true, this could also explain the potential for a smaller 12-inch LCD display, instead of the Mini LED or OLED panels used in higher-end MacBooks.

So far, pricing rumours for the MacBook Neo have been mixed. Earlier reports suggested an aggressive $599 (around Rs 55,000) price tag, which would make it Apple’s most affordable laptop ever.

However, the launch of the new M5 MacBook Air, which saw its starting price rise from Rs 99,900 to Rs 1,19,900, may complicate Apple’s pricing strategy.

If the Neo does exist, Apple will need to position it carefully, affordable enough to attract new users but not so cheap that it undercuts the Air.

In terms of design, Apple is likely to stick to its minimalist aesthetic, with a lightweight aluminium chassis and a handful of colour options to appeal to younger buyers. Battery life is expected to be a major selling point, especially if the Neo uses the power-efficient A-series silicon, potentially offering all-day performance similar to the iPad.

The leak’s timing suggests Apple may officially unveil the MacBook Neo during Wednesday’s event, or even drop it quietly online shortly before.
