Is your phone overheating in this summer heat? Here’s what you should do

As temperatures continue to soar across several parts of India, people are not the only ones struggling with the heat. Smartphones, too, are feeling the pressure. From sudden battery drain and dimmed screens to overheating warnings and unexpected shutdowns, excessive heat can quietly damage your device long before you realise something is wrong.

Modern smartphones are essentially compact computers packed into slim metal and glass bodies. They generate heat naturally while charging, gaming, streaming or navigating. Add a brutal summer heatwave on top of that, and your phone’s cooling system can quickly become overwhelmed. According to Apple Support, iPhones are designed to work best between 0°C and 35°C. Similar guidance has also been shared by Samsung India Support.

The good news is that a few small changes in daily habits can significantly reduce overheating and protect your phone’s battery life during extreme weather.

Avoid direct sunlight whenever possible

Leaving your phone under direct sunlight is one of the fastest ways to overheat it. Whether it is placed on a car dashboard, carried in tight pockets outdoors or left beside a window, heat builds up rapidly inside the device.

Experts recommend keeping phones in shaded or ventilated areas whenever possible. Even short periods in parked cars can expose devices to dangerous temperatures. Apple warns that prolonged exposure to extreme heat can permanently shorten battery lifespan.

If your phone already feels unusually hot, avoid immediately placing it in a fridge or freezer. Sudden temperature changes can create condensation inside the device and damage internal components.

Reduce heavy usage during peak heat

Some everyday tasks are surprisingly demanding on smartphones. Video recording, gaming, video calls, GPS navigation and streaming content all force processors and batteries to work harder, generating more heat.

Using these features outdoors during peak afternoon heat makes overheating even more likely. Samsung advises users to close unnecessary apps, reduce multitasking and pause heavy tasks if the device becomes too warm.

Lowering screen brightness also helps. High brightness levels not only consume more battery but also increase internal temperature significantly. Activating Battery Saver or Low Power Mode can further reduce background activity and cooling stress.

If you are travelling, switching from 5G to 4G temporarily may also help reduce heat generation, especially in areas with unstable network signals where the phone constantly searches for connectivity.

Be careful while charging

Charging is one of the most common reasons phones heat up during summer. Fast charging, wireless charging and using heavy apps while charging can all push temperatures higher.

Manufacturers recommend using original or certified chargers and avoiding charging phones under pillows, blankets or inside bags where heat gets trapped.

Removing thick phone cases while charging can also help improve airflow. Some chunky rubber or metal cases trap heat instead of releasing it efficiently.

If your phone becomes too hot while charging, unplug it for a while and allow it to cool naturally before resuming.

Watch for overheating warnings

Most smartphones today include automatic thermal protection systems. If temperatures rise too high, the device may dim the display, slow performance, stop charging or temporarily shut down certain apps.

These warnings should not be ignored. Persistent overheating can damage battery health, reduce long-term performance and shorten the device’s overall lifespan.

As India’s heatwaves grow longer and more intense every year, protecting smartphones is becoming just as important as protecting ourselves. A cooler phone not only performs better but is also far more likely to survive the summer without permanent damage.
