Is Samsung planning a slidable phone? Tipster claims Galaxy Z TriFold 2 may face delay

As rising component costs continue to affect manufacturers, Samsung may delay the launch of its second-generation tri-fold smartphone. A slew of reports circulating online now suggests that the Galaxy Z TriFold 2 could arrive later than originally planned, despite the company continuing work on a redesigned hinge expected to make the device thinner and lighter.

Reports also indicate that Samsung's long-rumoured slidable smartphone could debut before the Galaxy Z TriFold 2, potentially reshuffling the launch order of the company's upcoming foldable devices.

According to a post on Naver Blog by tipster Lanzuk, citing companies linked to Samsung's supply chain, the Galaxy Z TriFold 2 remains under development. However, a series of cost-related challenges has reportedly increased the likelihood of the handset missing its initially planned release window.

The report further claims that Samsung is continuing work on a redesigned hinge for the upcoming device. The new mechanism is said to use components with more consistent dimensions, which could reduce the handset's thickness and weight while giving it a more uniform profile.

Meanwhile, another device in Samsung's pipeline is expected to feature a slidable display that expands by extending the screen from the chassis. Over the years, Samsung has showcased concepts such as Rollable Flex and Flex Hybrid, but the company has yet to commercialise a smartphone based on either design.

According to PCMag.com, rollable smartphones use flexible OLED displays combined with motorised internal tracks. When activated, the screen slides out from a hidden section of the device, much like a scroll.

The upcoming device, reportedly dubbed the Galaxy Z Slide, is expected to feature a 10-inch display with a 16:9 aspect ratio, according to South Korean publication Money Today.

Rollable displays present greater engineering challenges than conventional foldable screens due to their increased structural complexity. They are also more susceptible to hardware fatigue, as the display must repeatedly bend and endure mechanical stress each time it rolls in and out.

The technology has already appeared in products beyond smartphones. Rollable displays have previously been used in televisions, while Lenovo introduced a similar concept with the ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 Rollable, released in June 2025. The laptop features a motorised mechanism that expands the display using hand gestures, allowing the screen to grow from 14 inches to 16.7 inches.
