Now, a new report from The Wall Street Journal offers perhaps the clearest look yet at how deeply the Epstein controversy may be affecting Gates' public image, business relationships and standing among some of the world's most influential figures.

For decades, Gates carefully transformed himself from hard-nosed software executive into one of the world's most recognisable philanthropists. Through the Gates Foundation, global health initiatives and climate investments, the Microsoft founder cultivated an image that often overshadowed memories of the fierce businessman who built one of the world's most powerful technology companies.

According to the report, however, that image is beginning to show cracks.

The report claims Gates and his team have spent years carefully managing his public persona, monitoring how he is perceived and shaping everything from appearances to messaging. Yet despite those efforts, recent revelations surrounding his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein have increasingly become impossible to separate from the broader Gates narrative.

A reputation built over decades faces fresh scrutiny

The Wall Street Journal reports that internal efforts to track public sentiment suggest Gates' favourability ratings have declined as renewed attention has focused on his interactions with Epstein.

While Gates has repeatedly acknowledged meeting Epstein and described those meetings as a mistake, the issue has continued to resurface, particularly as additional documents, emails and reports have emerged over time.

The scrutiny has extended beyond Epstein alone. Discussions surrounding Gates' personal life, including revelations about extramarital relationships during his marriage, have also contributed to renewed examination of his public image.

One factor that appears to have amplified the fallout is the role played by Gates' former wife, Melinda French Gates. In previous interviews, she identified his relationship with Epstein as a significant factor in her decision to end their marriage after nearly three decades together.

The combination of personal disclosures and ongoing public interest in the Epstein files has created a reputational challenge unlike any Gates has faced since stepping away from Microsoft's day-to-day operations.

The Journal points to comments Buffett made earlier this year indicating that he had not spoken with Gates since the latest Epstein-related disclosures. While neither man has publicly characterised the situation as a falling out, the report portrays a growing distance between two figures once considered among the closest partnerships in global philanthropy.

The ripple effects reportedly extend beyond personal relationships. Gates has allegedly withdrawn from or missed several high-profile events in recent months. He was notably absent from Berkshire Hathaway's annual meeting, an event he had regularly attended for years. Reports suggest advisers recommended that he stay away, despite not being formally excluded.

The Journal also claims some speaking engagements and executive gatherings have quietly disappeared from his schedule as organisations seek to avoid becoming entangled in controversy.

Whether this represents a temporary reputational setback or a more lasting shift remains unclear. Gates remains one of the world's wealthiest individuals and continues to lead one of the largest philanthropic organisations on the planet.

Yet the report highlights a reality increasingly familiar in the digital age: carefully constructed public images can take decades to build, but only a few controversies to fundamentally alter.
